Enamelware contains no harmful substances like lead, is easy to carry and clean, making it widely popular.However, enamel has a weakness: it's vulnerable to impact and surface damage. Studies indicate that if the damaged area of an enamel cup comes into contact with acidic substances like beverages, it can leach harmful substances such as heavy metals. Plastic Cups—Understand Grades Before Purchasing
Plastic cups are a popular choice among outdoor enthusiasts and office workers, beloved for their vibrant colors, diverse designs, and shatter-resistant properties.But how much do we really know about plastic cups? Plastic is a polymeric material. Most types release molecules when exposed to hot water, posing health risks when consumed. Additionally, the internal microstructure of plastic contains numerous pores that trap contaminants. If not cleaned thoroughly, these can become breeding grounds for bacteria. Therefore, when selecting plastic cups, ensure they are made from food-grade plastic that meets national standards.
Plastics, like us, have identification codes. Typically found on the bottom of bottles or cups, a triangular recycling symbol indicates recyclability. The numbers 1-7 inside the triangle denote different plastic materials. 1. PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate): Withstands temperatures up to 70°C. Commonly used in mineral water bottles and beverage containers. 2. HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene): Resistant to temperatures up to 110°C. 7. PC (Polycarbonate): Commonly found in kettles, water cups, and baby bottles. Avoid heating when in use.
Tip: Plastic products degrade over time, with a general recommended lifespan of about 2 years. For plastic water cups, choose transparent, uncolored options with clear, explicit labeling. Open the lid and smell it—an unusual odor indicates substandard materials.
Paper Cups—Avoid When Possible
When purchasing disposable paper cups, check for sealed packaging and verify the presence of the QS production license, manufacturer's name, address, and production date. Note: Substandard cups emit an odor upon opening due to potentially low-quality ink. Typically, such cups are flimsy and deform easily when filled with water; some may even leak.Touching the inner surface may leave fine powder residue on your fingers, turning the contact area white—a classic sign of inferior quality.
Also check heat resistance ratings and expiration dates. Before first use, discard the initial water and rinse with boiling water for several seconds to evaporate harmful substances. Thus, avoiding paper cups whenever possible is best.
