Bananas have always been a beloved fruit, prized for their delicious sweetness and rich nutritional value, making them suitable for all ages. They also help lower cholesterol levels, prevent gastrointestinal ulcers, treat hypertension, aid weight loss, and promote beauty. So, what are some tips for selecting bananas?
1. Avoid bananas that are bright yellow with spotless skin—they haven't fully ripened and will taste hard and astringent. However, these are acceptable if not eaten immediately or intended as gifts.
2. Opt for bananas with yellow-black skin tinged with red, preferably those with black spots (often called sesame bananas). Bananas with wrinkled skin offer the best flavor.
3. Bananas that yield slightly to gentle pressure are sweeter, with pale yellow flesh, minimal fiber, a tender texture, and a hint of osmanthus fragrance.
4. After purchasing, store bananas in a cool, shaded place. Consume those with black spots and softer texture first—the riper and softer they are, the sweeter and more delicious they become.
When purchasing, also check that the stem end shows no black discoloration. If it appears dry and shriveled, the banana may be starting to spoil and should not be bought. If the peel is slightly green and the aroma is not yet strong, storing it at home for a few days will allow it to develop a fragrant scent and become exceptionally delicious.
