Factors Affecting Blood Pressure
Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg). According to the World Health Organization's 1999 guidelines: - Below 120/80 mmHg is considered ideal systolic/diastolic blood pressure - Below 139/89 mmHg is normal blood pressure - 140/90 mmHg to 160/95 mmHg is prehypertension - 161/96 mmHg or higher is hypertension.Blood pressure ensures blood is transported normally through arteries to the entire body. If blood pressure is too low, it cannot adequately supply blood throughout the body. Conversely, excessively high blood pressure may damage blood vessels and may indicate abnormalities in the blood or heart. Blood pressure is influenced by the following factors:
1. Height: The taller the body, the greater the pressure the heart must exert to pump blood effectively throughout the body.
2. Age: Younger individuals have higher metabolic rates and greater blood flow, requiring the heart to pump with more force. This changes with age.
3. Blood viscosity (blood density): Thicker blood requires greater pressure from the heart to pump it through the vessels.
4. Posture: Blood pressure is higher when standing than when sitting, and higher when sitting than when lying down.This is due to the effects of gravity.
5. Vascular Resistance: If blood vessels narrow, blood flow becomes restricted, forcing the heart to exert greater pressure to pump blood.
