The kidneys are vital organs responsible for detoxification. However, we now face numerous kidney diseases that pose significant threats to our health, making kidney care essential.
Methods for Kidney Protection
1. Maintain unobstructed urination. Smooth urination indicates normal kidney excretory function. Urinary tract obstruction or difficulty urinating increases the risk of inflammation in the renal pelvis and kidney parenchyma, exacerbates kidney strain, and may even lead to uremia. Common causes of urinary obstruction include urinary stones, enlarged prostate, tumors, and tuberculosis.
2. Prevent infections from reaching the kidneys. To avoid bacterial ascending infections causing kidney disease, maintain cleanliness of the perineum and urethral opening. Microorganisms can also infect the kidneys via the bloodstream or lymphatic system. Therefore, promptly treat infections in other body areas, such as tonsillitis, dental caries, boils, or tuberculosis.
3. Prevent disease-related kidney damage. Conditions like allergic purpura, systemic lupus erythematosus, severe dehydration, and blood loss can all harm the kidneys. When such diseases occur, in addition to prompt treatment, protective measures should be strengthened.
4. Prevent drug-induced kidney damage. Most medications enter the bloodstream to exert their effects. As these drugs undergo metabolic processes within the body, they are ultimately filtered by the kidneys for excretion, making the kidneys susceptible to drug-related harm. Therefore, medications known to be nephrotoxic should not be used indiscriminately.
5. Dietary Considerations: Avoid excessively high-fat diets, as excessive fat intake may lead to renal artery atherosclerosis, causing kidney atrophy and degeneration, and resulting in atherosclerotic nephropathy. Alkaline foods benefit kidney health, helping prevent urinary tract stones. Appropriate consumption of winter melon, white茅根 (white茅 root), adzuki beans, and mung beans can also aid diuresis, clear heat, and protect kidney function.

(1) Waiguan Point
Located in the depression 3-4 cun lateral to the spinous process of the third lumbar vertebra on the back.
