Naughty children are a major nuisance in today's society. News reports frequently feature incidents involving them—such as causing disturbances in movie theaters, randomly pressing elevator buttons, or damaging public property. During holidays and celebrations, encountering such children is the most dreaded experience—they cannot be scolded or disciplined. Many parents use the excuse that their child is still young. But is being a little monster truly caused by being too young to understand?
In reality, many little monsters are the result of excessive parental indulgence. Being young and unaware cannot serve as an excuse for misbehavior. Overindulgence warps a child's character, manifesting as a form of spoiled child syndrome. So what exactly is spoiled child syndrome? Associate Professor Jia Yanbin, Chief Physician of the Department of Psychiatry at the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University, explained this condition in a previous interview. Professor Jia stated that spoiled child syndrome is a newly emerging disorder in modern society. It refers to situations where adults excessively pamper, overprotect, or indulge children, leading to psychological abnormalities and various physical and mental disorders in the child. This syndrome can occur at any age during childhood, though it is most prevalent among preschoolers. Affected children typically exhibit selfishness, timidity, antisocial tendencies, and a domineering attitude. Consequently, the "spoiled brats" frequently featured in news reports are highly likely to suffer from this syndrome, prompting parents to remain vigilant. So how can spoiled syndrome be corrected?
Professor Jia emphasizes that excessive parental indulgence is the primary cause of this syndrome. Thus, addressing it must begin with the parents. Only when parents recognize their mistakes and alter their parenting approach can children receive proper guidance.Parents must fully grasp the psychological harm and long-term detrimental effects of excessive indulgence on their children. They should abandon permissive parenting methods and never turn a blind eye to their child's shortcomings. Instead, they must firmly demand and assist in correcting these issues. Over time, the child's undesirable behaviors will diminish. Under proper parental guidance, the child will gradually understand appropriate conduct, thereby shedding bad habits and developing a healthier mindset.
Therefore, to educate a "problem child," one must first educate their parents. Parents are a child's first teachers. The saying "If a child is not taught, it is the father's fault" is a principle every parent must grasp. To ensure children grow up healthily and avoid becoming universally disliked "problem children," parents must prioritize their children's character education.
