New Strategy Aids Fight Against Bacterial Sepsis

Recently, researchers at the University of Tübingen in Germany developed a novel experimental strategy to prevent and treat bacterial sepsis without antibiotics. Instead, they used acetate as an active ingredient to stimulate the body's own immune system.
Sepsis refers to an acute systemic infection caused by various pathogens invading the bloodstream, multiplying within the blood, and producing toxins. Previous studies indicate that approximately 20% of global deaths are attributable to this condition.In 2017, approximately 48.9 million cases of sepsis occurred worldwide, resulting in nearly 11 million deaths—many of them children. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which exhibits resistance to numerous common antibiotics, ranks among the most frequent causes of sepsis. The World Health Organization reports that antimicrobial resistance poses a major challenge in treating sepsis.
