BMJ Open: Coffee Consumption May Lower Prostate Cancer Risk in Men
Previous studies suggested coffee could reduce risks for liver, breast, and colorectal cancers, but its impact on prostate cancer remained unexplored.
To explore the relationship between coffee intake and prostate cancer risk, international researchers compiled data from studies involving 1,081,586 individuals, including 57,732 prostate cancer patients. Participants' daily coffee consumption ranged from 0-2 cups to 2-9 cups.
Data analysis revealed that compared to the lowest coffee consumers, the highest consumers may have a 9% lower risk of prostate cancer, along with a 12%-16% reduced risk of advanced prostate cancer and fatal prostate cancer. Additionally, each additional cup of coffee consumed daily was associated with a 1% lower risk of prostate cancer.
Why might coffee help prevent prostate cancer? Research suggests this could be linked to coffee's anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, its ability to improve glucose metabolism, and its effects on sex hormones.
Of course, this study only indicates an association between coffee intake and prostate cancer risk—not a causal relationship. Researchers will continue investigating the underlying mechanisms to provide new insights for prostate cancer prevention and treatment.
Currently, whether coffee is "carcinogenic" or "anti-cancer" remains controversial. The author cannot encourage everyone to drink coffee for cancer prevention based solely on this study.
So, is coffee good or bad? What are its pros and cons?
Coffee has always been a controversial figure—loved by some who can't go a day without it, yet scorned by others who dismiss it entirely.In reality, coffee is a double-edged sword, offering both benefits and drawbacks.
The caffeine in coffee helps activate the central nervous system, combating fatigue and eliminating exhaustion to provide mental alertness. This is precisely why it's not the alarm clock but a steaming cup of coffee that wakes up urban professionals each morning.
Furthermore, coffee's nicotinic acid provides vitamin B, with roasted beans containing even higher levels. It also contains free fatty acids, caffeine, tannic acid, and other nutrients beneficial to health.
Of course, excessive coffee consumption is also detrimental. First, coffee can interfere with the body's absorption of minerals like iron and calcium. Studies show that women who drink more than two cups of coffee daily face a 69% higher risk of fractures over 12 years compared to non-coffee drinkers.
Second, heavy coffee intake may lead to caffeine-induced anxiety, triggering obsessive-compulsive tendencies, panic attacks, and other emotional disturbances.
Additionally, coffee and medications are natural enemies. Coffee intake may interfere with the effects of antidepressants, estrogen, thyroid hormones, osteoporosis treatments, and other drugs. Therefore, it's best to avoid coffee when taking medication for illness.
Who should avoid coffee?
1. Diabetics
A 2017 study spanning 12 years by a foreign hospital found that short-term heavy coffee consumption reduces insulin sensitivity, leading to elevated blood sugar levels.
2. Women planning pregnancy or who are pregnant
Although no definitive evidence proves coffee harms pregnant or pre-pregnancy women, it is still not recommended for this group. A study published in the Journal of Endocrinology showed that excessive caffeine intake during pregnancy can damage the fetal liver, increasing the risk of liver disease in adulthood.
3. Individuals with hypertension
Research indicates that blood pressure elevation following coffee consumption can persist for up to 12 hours. Hypertensive individuals are advised to avoid coffee to prevent exacerbating their condition.Since many cardiovascular conditions involve tachycardia, coffee consumption is also inadvisable.
Overall, coffee offers both benefits and risks to human health. While no evidence links it to cancer, we shouldn't expect it to prevent cancer either. Regardless of the joys and sorrows coffee brings, the author simply advises: don't overindulge.
