After birth, babies lose the protective environment of the womb and become highly susceptible to infections. Parents must closely monitor their baby's condition and familiarize themselves with common newborn illnesses to implement targeted prevention. Below, we outline the most prevalent health risks for newborns:
New Parents: Be Vigilant About These Five Common Newborn Conditions (Public Health Network)
1.Oxygen Deprivation and Asphyxia
During delivery, oxygen deprivation may occur, manifesting as weak breathing in newborns or even a heartbeat without respiration. If the fetal heart rate falls below 120 or rises above 160 beats per minute, accompanied by yellowish-green amniotic fluid, these are signs of oxygen deprivation. This condition can cause asphyxia, leading to brain cell death and potentially fatal outcomes. Therefore, hypoxia must be taken seriously. Clear any obstructions from the baby's airway, gently tap the soles of the feet, or stimulate the skin to help restore breathing.
2. Intracranial Hemorrhage
When a baby exhibits seizures, vomiting, breathing difficulties, high-pitched crying, lack of limb response, or even respiratory distress, it may indicate a ruptured blood vessel in the newborn's skull. This is a life-threatening emergency requiring immediate medical intervention!
3. Head Swelling
A small percentage of newborns may present with a round swelling on the head at birth. If the swelling does not extend beyond the sutures, it is a subgaleal hematoma. If the edges are indistinct, extend beyond the sutures, and exhibit a fluctuant sensation, it is scalp edema, clinically termed cephalohematoma.Hematomas typically resolve spontaneously within 1-4 months, while edema usually disappears after 2-3 months. Parents need not worry about these conditions and should avoid treatment or forced aspiration.
4. Neonatal Pneumonia
Neonatal pneumonia is common and lacks specific diagnostic markers. It primarily occurs when the fetus inadvertently inhales vaginal secretions and amniotic fluid during delivery.Another cause is respiratory tract infection. Neonatal pneumonia manifests in two forms: acute cases present with perioral cyanosis, coughing, and abdominal distension; chronic cases exhibit low body temperature and generalized coldness. Therefore, if an infant shows symptoms like persistent fussiness, vomiting, or milk aspiration without fever, chronic pneumonia should be suspected. If an infant shows symptoms of pneumonia, seek immediate treatment at a children's hospital without delay. Every minute of delay puts the child's life at risk!
5. Jaundice
When a newborn's ability to excrete and metabolize waste is insufficient, the risk of developing infant jaundice is high. This is typically caused by excessive bilirubin production.
