A team of scientists from ETH Zurich and other institutions has developed a novel perfusion machine capable of preserving human livers outside the body for up to one week and restoring damaged livers to a healthy state. Globally, organ shortages persist due to insufficient supply meeting clinical demand, and current techniques struggle to extend organ viability beyond a single day.This new perfusion machine has successfully kept livers viable outside the body for seven days. Scientists explain that the device mimics normal liver function by delivering blood and oxygen, managing blood sugar levels and red blood cell counts. Crucially, it operates fully autonomously without requiring constant monitoring.
