Why Do Newborns Constantly Clench Their Fists? If They Keep Gripping After 4 Months, Be Alert for Potential Intelligence Issues

Many new parents wonder why newborns clench their fists tightly during the first few months. Some parents with OCD persistently try to straighten their baby's fists, forcing their tiny hands open.
So why do newborns keep their fists clenched? Can we forcefully straighten their hands? Understanding this requires a closer look at infant development.
Typically, within the first two to three months after birth, babies keep their hands mostly clenched into fists, with the thumb tucked securely between the other four fingers.
This phenomenon is primarily linked to the immature development of the newborn's cerebral cortex, which limits their ability to regulate hand muscles. The "flexor muscles" (those that bend the fingers) are stronger than the "extensor muscles" (those that straighten them).Consequently, newborns tend to keep their fingers curved, resulting in the "fist-clenched" posture we observe.
However, not all babies are born with clenched fists, nor do they remain in this position permanently. As long as the baby's developmental milestones are normal—eating well, sleeping soundly, and appearing alert—parents need not worry excessively.
As the baby grows, their nervous system gradually matures, and the strength of the extensor muscles increases. When the strength of the extensor and flexor muscles reaches a "balanced state," the baby's little hands will naturally begin to unfold. They will start using both hands to touch and explore the world around them, begin sucking their fingers, and even use their hands to put nearby objects into their mouths.
As for whether to forcefully straighten a baby's hands, this is not recommended.Unless the baby shows unusual symptoms, this clenched fist posture is normal. Forcibly straightening the hands can easily injure the baby.
However, if the baby's hands remain tightly clenched and cannot open after 4 months, parents should be vigilant about potential developmental concerns, particularly cerebral palsy. It is crucial to take the baby to the hospital promptly for a thorough examination.
Infant development is a mysterious and wondrous journey. New parents must remain vigilant. Seek guidance and knowledge when uncertain—never act on assumptions that could harm your baby. To support your baby's cognitive growth and motor skills, consult healthcare professionals or childcare specialists for guidance on fine motor skill training.
