What is the correct way to blow your nose?

A reporter randomly surveyed colleagues and friends, discovering that most people habitually pinch both nostrils shut before forcefully blowing their nose. Others enjoy picking their nose, feeling uncomfortable unless they "take matters into their own hands" when their nose feels dirty. In fact, these methods are incorrect. Pinching both nostrils forces mucus into the posterior nasal cavity. If it reaches the Eustachian tube or enters the paranasal sinuses, it can trigger otitis media or sinusitis.
The correct method is to pinch one nostril closed, then forcefully exhale to clear mucus from the other nostril. Repeat for the opposite side. If congestion prevents blowing, use ephedrine nasal drops to clear passages first.
Picking your nose is also inadvisable. Frequent nose-picking can damage the nasal mucosa and introduce bacteria into the nasal cavity, potentially causing respiratory infections.
The proper method for nasal cleansing is water rinsing. First, tilt your head downward. Cup water in both hands and pour it into one nostril. Gently inhale the water through that nostril. If some water enters the back of your throat, simply spit it out through your mouth. Additionally, specialized nasal irrigation devices—such as squeeze-ball or teapot-style models—are available on the market. Follow the instructions provided to cleanse your nasal passages.
