Sexual intercourse is best enjoyed in one fluid motion, allowing sexual desire to be fully released. Yet, awkward moments often arise unexpectedly. For instance, sudden vaginal spasms may prevent penetration, causing the woman to tremble in pain. Or during intercourse, a sudden "popping" or "squeaking" sound—like flatulence or water—may be heard, only to be traced back to the vagina. So what issues might arise during sex?
Common Issues During Sexual Activity
1. Spasms and Pain
The most frequent occurrence is muscle cramping in the outer thighs or calves during intercourse, commonly known as cramps. This may result from overly vigorous movements or excessive muscle stretching during sex.
2. Neck Pain
Stiff or strained neck muscles are prone to injury. To alleviate muscle strain, wrap a twisted towel around the neck and secure both ends to support the head. However, vigorous movements may push the diaphragm deeper, making removal difficult. Health experts recommend squatting while holding your breath and contracting your abdomen. This pushes the diaphragm outward to a reachable position for self-removal.
4. Back Strain
Regardless of cause or position, cease sexual activity immediately if back pain occurs.Pain should not occur during normal sexual activity. Back pain during sex is more common in women with relatively weaker back muscles. The recommended treatment is to immediately lie on your side with knees bent, place a pillow between your knees, and apply a cold compress to the area.
5. Trouble Caused by Excessive Sexual Activity — Urinary Tract Infections
This is a common issue.Generally, engaging in sex 4-5 times per week or having prolonged sessions counts as excessive. Overdoing it allows bacteria to enter the urethra and even ascend to the bladder, leading to urinary tract infections. 6. Allergic Reactions to Sexual Activity Dr. David Weinberg, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at NYU School of Medicine, diagnosed multiple cases of sexual activity allergies and concluded:Allergic reactions are mostly caused by intolerance to latex foam, other contraceptive devices, or medications. Women often experience vaginal stinging or burning. Therefore, the allergy is not truly to the act of sex itself. If an allergic reaction occurs, use water, a damp towel, or tissue to wipe away or rinse off any residual liquids or creams, then take a warm bath.
7. Contraceptive Displacement
Nearly all married couples have experienced condom breakage or vaginal diaphragm displacement. There is no need to panic in such situations. The correct course of action is to take two doses of emergency contraception within 72 hours. If the condom slips off inside the vagina, simply grasp its base gently and pull it out.
8. Pelvic Congestion
During sexual arousal, significant blood flow to pelvic tissues causes congestion. If orgasm isn't achieved, this congestion may subside slowly. Lie flat with one pillow elevating your hips for 30 minutes, 3-4 times daily, to aid blood return. Anti-inflammatory medications like aspirin may be taken if needed.
Two Habits Linked to Poor Sexual Quality
Expert surveys indicate that approximately 30% of American women aged 18-59 experience chronic low libido. Among women under 40, 27% cannot achieve orgasm, and 13%-15% experience painful intercourse. This phenomenon is widespread among women globally, with most attributing it to heavy burdens from work, children, and household chores.
It is also linked to five common daily habits:
Habit 1:Excessive Cleanliness
Many women, driven by an obsession with cleanliness, use scented sanitary pads during menstruation or excessively clean their genital area with vaginal washes. This disrupts the natural pH balance of the vagina, causing discomfort and increasing susceptibility to yeast infections. These symptoms directly impact the quality of sexual life. In reality, the vagina has a self-cleaning function, and rinsing with warm water is sufficient.
Habit 2: Taking Birth Control Pills
Oral contraceptives are one of the most common methods of birth control for women, offering high effectiveness and convenience. However, as a sex hormone medication, it disrupts the body's natural hormonal balance, affecting the secretion of both androgens and estrogens. This can reduce vaginal lubrication, leading to discomfort or pain during intercourse due to dryness.
