Gao Bingpeng, head of the mathematics teaching and research group at No. 14 Middle School and a senior mathematics teacher, engaged in a face-to-face discussion with parents and students. Reporters observed that the number of parents present significantly outnumbered the students. Many parents shared that their children harbored a fear of mathematics and dreaded entering the mathematics classroom.
Ms. He from Wuchang District shared that her son, a freshman at Wuhan High School, struggled with math since junior high. After just two weeks of high school, he was already feeling overwhelmed. To help him overcome his fear, she joined him in doing math homework daily. Some problems were completely baffling to her as a humanities major, yet she persisted in learning alongside him. Unfortunately, her son's motivation remained stubbornly low.
"Psychological resistance is the arch-enemy of math learning," said teacher Gao Bingpeng, who praised the mother's approach as commendable.Many children aren't incapable of excelling in math; they simply can't overcome that psychological barrier, which may stem from past unpleasant learning experiences. How can we rekindle interest in math? Try starting with chapters that spark curiosity, focusing on related problems. Through the process of solving them, students can grasp mathematical thinking methods and experience the joy of conquering challenges—which can then fuel interest in other chapters.
