Most people enjoy eating bananas, and it's not unusual for some to dislike them. However, there are individuals who suffer from a phobia of bananas, also known as "banana phobia."
While friends often complain about food allergies, one British woman suffered from "banana phobia"—experiencing nausea, vomiting, and even shortness of breath at the sight or smell of bananas. Curious how she overcame it? Let's find out!
Paula Rose, a 23-year-old British woman, appears cheerful and positive.Few know she's dreaded bananas for 20 years, unable to even share a room with the fruit. Through hypnotherapy, Rose overcame her phobia, daring to pick up a banana and eat it bite by bite.
Rose lives in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire.Like most children, she was forced by her parents to eat fruit daily as a child, developing a strong aversion—especially to bananas.
Over time, this aversion intensified until the mere sight or smell of bananas made her feel nauseous. Rose told British media: "I couldn't even stand in a room where bananas were present."
After starting school, some classmates who knew about her "banana phobia" found it hard to understand and often teased her with bananas. She said, "At school, classmates would chase me around the playground holding bananas, and everyone laughed at me. They thought it was hilarious."
There are precedents for banana phobia.British woman Fran Dando suffers from this phobia. She says even a glimpse of the yellow, curved fruit causes rapid breathing, cold sweats, and sometimes vomiting.
To help those with banana phobia overcome their fear, the first step is psychological reassurance. With time, they can gradually conquer their banana phobia.
