To many, melon seeds are merely tasty snacks that commonly cause dry mouth, canker sores, indigestion, and internal heat. In reality, melon seeds possess remarkable health benefits. These misconceptions often stem from insufficient knowledge or excessive consumption. Below, we explore the functions and effects of the melon seeds we commonly eat.
I. Benefits and Functions of Melon Seeds
1. Nutritional Value:
Also known as "hair-beautifying nuts," melon seeds boast a protein content of up to 20% while being low in calories. Their fats are primarily unsaturated fatty acids, and they contain abundant dietary fiber, vitamin E, phospholipids, and are cholesterol-free.
2. Medicinal Value of Melon Seeds:
Consuming melon seeds aids digestion, lowers blood lipids, stabilizes blood pressure, calms the mind, and nourishes hair and skin. Their abundant unsaturated fatty acids promote cellular regeneration and prevent cardiovascular diseases. The linoleic acid in melon seeds plays a crucial role in metabolism, blood pressure regulation, and reducing serum cholesterol.Multiple antioxidants combat free radicals within the body, reducing the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and cancer while enhancing immune function.
3. Functions of Sunflower Seeds: Rich in unsaturated fatty acids, sunflower seeds lower cholesterol and help prevent arteriosclerosis, hypertension, and coronary heart disease. Their abundant iron, zinc, and manganese content aids in preventing anemia.Rich in Vitamin B1 and Vitamin E, they help stabilize mood, prevent cellular aging, guard against adult diseases, treat insomnia, and enhance memory. They offer certain preventive benefits against cancer, hypertension, and neurasthenia. However, excessive consumption can severely deplete saliva, affecting oral health and potentially causing indigestion. II. How to Select Melon Seeds
High-quality melon seeds are uniformly sized, plump, free of salt residue, and possess a natural sheen. Premium seeds contain no small kernels, shriveled seeds, yellow-skinned seeds, or insect-damaged seeds. When sampling a small handful, the taste should be moderately sweet and salty. Cream-flavored seeds have a milky aroma, pepper-salted seeds carry a savory spice blend, and plain seeds retain their natural fragrance without rancid, moldy, or burnt flavors.
III. Contraindications for Melon Seeds:
1. Avoid if suffering from spleen-stomach deficiency-cold, abdominal distension, or loose stools.
2. Those with a history of vomiting blood or hemoptysis, gastric ulcers, or heart disease should consume with caution. Note: Fragrant melon calyx refers to sweet melon calyx, known in Chinese medicine as "bitter clove."
Reference Recipes:
1. Wash fragrant melon and eat freely to relieve summer heat.
2. Grind 30g melon seeds with appropriate sugar into a fine powder. Dissolve in warm water to treat intestinal or lung abscesses.
3. Roast 15g melon seeds with 30g whole Angelica sinensis root and 3g snake skin. Dry, grind into powder. Take 10g three times daily for appendicitis.
4. Pound muskmelon leaves into a paste and apply to affected areas to treat scalp ringworm.
5. Burn muskmelon calyx until charred, grind into powder. May be combined with Asarum powder. Take a small amount and blow into the nose three times daily to treat chronic hypertrophic rhinitis and nasal collapse.
6.Dry melon stems, grind into powder. Divide 0.1g into three portions. First inhale one portion deeply through both nostrils. After about 40 minutes, clean nasal passages and inhale another portion. After another 40 minutes, inhale the final portion. After seven days, repeat the same method with 0.1g. Completing 0.4g constitutes one treatment course for jaundice or non-jaundiced infectious hepatitis and cirrhosis.Generally, two treatment courses suffice for chronic hepatitis; cirrhosis requires three to five courses. After inhalation, copious yellow fluid (up to 100 milliliters per session) will drain from the nasal passages. During inhalation, the patient must tilt their head forward to allow the fluid to drip out. Do not swallow it to avoid diarrhea. Occasional symptoms like headache, chills, fever (resembling a cold), or increased liver/spleen pain may occur but typically resolve naturally within a day.
