Perfume is a liquid blend of essential oils, fixatives, and alcohol, designed to impart a lasting and pleasant scent to objects (typically parts of the human body).Essential oils are distilled from flowers and plants, such as orange blossoms or roses. When distillation isn't feasible, enfleurage is used—for instance, in jasmine absolute. Enfleurage involves absorbing fragrant substances into oils, which are then extracted with alcohol to yield essential oils. Fragrant chemicals are also employed.
Fixatives bind various fragrances together, including balsams, ambergris, and secretions from the scent glands of civet cats and musk deer (which are unpleasant on their own but act as long-lasting agents in alcohol solutions). Alcohol concentration varies depending on whether the product is perfume, eau de toilette, or cologne. The shelf life of perfume is typically five years.
While "perfume" is commonly used as a generic term, distinctions exist based on precise formulations. The ratio of alcohol to fragrance components—known as the perfume concentration—determines scent performance. Higher concentrations mean lower alcohol content and higher fragrance proportion, resulting in longer-lasting scents. Perfumes are generally classified into four tiers.
Grade: Parfum
Abbreviation: P
Concentration: 15–30%
Longevity: 5–7 hours
Characteristics: Highest fragrance purity with extended wear. Typically designed for dabbing; a small amount applied to wrists and neck provides lasting performance.Grade: Eau de Parfum (EDP) Abbreviation: EDP Concentration: 10–15% Longevity: Approximately 5 hours Characteristics: Offers better longevity than Eau de Toilette. Ideal for workplaces or events where frequent reapplication is impractical.
Classification: Eau de Toilette
Abbreviation: EDT
Concentration: 5–10%
Longevity: 3–4 hours
Characteristics: With a higher alcohol content, Eau de Toilette evaporates more quickly. Applied in the morning, it can be refreshed during midday breaks, maintaining a subtle scent into the afternoon. Ideal for those who prefer a crisp, refreshing fragrance.
Grade: Eau de Cologne
