What should not be eaten with dried shrimp?
Dried shrimp, as the name suggests, are the dried shells of shrimp, either raw or cooked. Two common types are available: sun-dried and boiled.
Dried shrimp have a sweet and salty flavor with a warm nature;boost kidney function and yang energy, regulate qi, and stimulate appetite. Their nutritional value is exceptionally high. In terms of protein content—a key indicator of nutritional quality—100 grams of dried shrimp shells contain 39.3 grams of protein, significantly surpassing seafood like large yellow croaker, yellow croaker, tiger prawns, hairtail, and pomfret, as well as meat products such as beef, pork, and chicken.Another key feature of dried shrimp is its rich variety and quantity of minerals. Per 100 grams, it contains 991 milligrams of calcium and 582 milligrams of phosphorus. Thus, dried shrimp is often called a calcium treasure trove.
1. Red Dates
Modern medicine recognizes that red dates are rich in nutrients including protein, fat, carbohydrates, carotene, B vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin P, calcium, phosphorus, iron, and cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP).Jujubes have exceptionally high vitamin C content, exceeding 400 milligrams per 100 grams of fresh flesh. Some call them "natural vitamin C pills" due to their antioxidant and anti-aging properties.
However, shrimp shells and red dates should never be consumed together, as this combination can cause poisoning. Excessive vitamin intake from red dates may reduce arsenic pentoxide (As₂O₅) in shrimp to arsenic trioxide (As₂O₃, or arsenic), leading to poisoning.
Generally, accidentally eating a few red dates after consuming shrimp poses little risk. However, if both are consumed in large quantities together, closely monitor your physical condition. Seek immediate medical attention if severe discomfort occurs. Therefore, when eating red dates, it's best to avoid consuming dried shrimp at the same time.
2. Spinach
Spinach is not only rich in beta-carotene but also an excellent source of vitamin B6, folate, iron, and potassium. Dried shrimp contains abundant protein and minerals, particularly calcium—so rich it's called a calcium bank—making it an ideal calcium supplement for those deficient.
However, shrimp flakes and spinach should not be consumed together, as combining them impairs calcium absorption. Therefore, avoid eating spinach after consuming shrimp flakes to prevent reducing nutritional value.
3. Soybeans
Soy protein and phytosterols in soybeans significantly improve blood lipids and cholesterol levels, thereby lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease.Additionally, soybeans contain abundant phytoestrogens, which can reduce women's risk of hormone-related cancers.
While soybeans offer numerous benefits, note that they should not be consumed with dried shrimp. Soybeans contain trypsin inhibitors and coagulase, which can cause indigestion when eaten together.
What foods should not be eaten with dried shrimp? Three incompatible foods are introduced. Finally, a reminder: dried shrimp can be prepared in many ways. Take a small handful, add sesame oil and chopped scallions, then sprinkle with nori seaweed. Pour boiling water over it, and you'll have a bowl of delicious, aromatic broth.Home-style dishes like dried shrimp with tofu, dried shrimp with leeks, dried shrimp with scallions, and dried shrimp radish soup are all delicious. Using them as filling for wontons not only enhances the freshness but also boosts nutritional value.
