In daily life, no one can predict future events, and unexpected incidents often occur. Accidental injuries may cause swelling and pain in certain body parts, leading to intense discomfort that requires prompt treatment. So, what methods can reduce swelling?
Methods for Reducing Swelling
Cucumber
Cucumber has a sweet taste and a cold nature, entering the stomach and small intestine meridians. It clears heat, quenches thirst, promotes urination, and detoxifies. Cucumbers can be eaten raw, in salads, stir-fried, or added to soups. Eating them raw stimulates saliva production and relieves thirst. For diuretic effects and reducing swelling, it's best to drink cucumber soup.Note: Cucumbers have a cold nature; those with a cold stomach should consume sparingly. Coffee Coffee is widely used for fat reduction and edema relief. Caffeine boosts metabolism, increases caloric expenditure to accelerate fat breakdown, and promotes water excretion—making it effective for facial and eye puffiness.Diabetics may consume two cups daily of black coffee without sugar or milk, which not only reduces swelling but also offers significant weight loss benefits. Winter Melon Winter melon has a sweet, bland, and cold nature, affecting the lung, stomach, large intestine, and small intestine meridians. It promotes urination, reduces swelling, clears heat, and quenches thirst. Rich in vitamin B1 and fiber, it aids large intestine peristalsis, expelling waste and toxins.Winter melon is a natural diuretic and anti-edema agent, offering excellent swelling reduction for diabetics. Its diuretic and anti-edema properties are primarily concentrated in the rind, so it should be simmered with the skin intact.
Job's Tears
Job's tears contain various components including job's tears oil, job's tears ester, and phytosterols. Job's tears oil can inhibit or reduce skeletal muscle contractions and has a stimulating effect on the uterus. Its fatty oil can lower serum calcium and blood sugar levels, and also has antipyretic, sedative, and analgesic effects.Job's tears promote blood and fluid metabolism, exerting diuretic and edema-reducing effects while expelling excess bodily fluids. Both raw and cooked varieties are used, with equal parts balancing each other for rapid efficacy in strengthening the spleen and draining dampness.
Physical Methods for Reducing Swelling
1. Ice Compress
For joint swelling caused by exercise, apply an ice pack. In emergencies without an ice pack, use chilled beverages or ice cream to stimulate the swollen area with cold, achieving rapid reduction.
2. Egg-based swelling reduction
Rolling a boiled egg over swollen areas is a folk remedy with proven effectiveness. This method shares principles with heat therapy. Apply cold compresses first, followed by heat, after 24 hours of facial swelling.
When massaging with a boiled egg, wrap it in a clean, damp towel.
This method can also be understood as using moderate heat to promote blood circulation and reduce swelling. A freshly boiled egg with its shell retains heat well and cools slowly. Its temperature and texture after peeling are ideal for stimulating blood flow and reducing swelling at the injury site.
Precautions for Reducing Swelling
1. Avoid excessive salt intake. To prevent water retention, reduce salt consumption during the week preceding your menstrual cycle. Aim for approximately 2–3 grams of salt per day. Limit salty foods, smoked items, processed meats, and sauces.
2. Promote smooth elimination. A healthy metabolism helps eliminate excess fluids. Daily intake of 400–800 mg of magnesium and vitamin B6 acts as a natural diuretic, significantly aiding in reducing swelling.Water lubricates the intestines and aids digestion. Inactivity disrupts digestion. Exercise activates bodily functions, particularly enhancing stomach and intestinal motility.
4. Avoid starchy foods after 5 PM. Starch absorbs water strongly. The worst scenario is consuming starchy foods like pasta or potatoes before bed, leading to severe morning swelling.
Note: Rice wine brewed from grains is also a starchy beverage.
5. Increase calcium intake. Consume at least 1200 mg of calcium daily starting one week before your period. Drink skim milk.Note: Rice wine made from grains is also a starchy beverage.
5. Increase calcium intake. Consume at least 1200 mg of calcium daily starting one week before your period, and drink skim milk. Recent studies indicate that adequate daily calcium intake can prevent water retention. The best beverages are calcium-fortified grapefruit juice and orange juice.
