While basal body temperature tracking is one method to aid conception, precise measurement can enhance your chances of getting pregnant. I. Basal Body Temperature Measurement Method Each morning upon waking, without speaking, moving, or getting out of bed, immediately take your oral (or rectal/axillary) temperature for at least 3 minutes.Record each day's basal body temperature on a chart and plot the data into a curve. This will reveal that temperatures are lower during the first half of the menstrual cycle and rise during the second half.
The day when the temperature begins to rise on the chart is the ovulation day. Factors like colds, fever, diarrhea, insomnia, alcohol consumption, or using electric blankets can often affect basal body temperature readings.
Typically, a woman's basal body temperature follows a cyclical pattern matching her menstrual cycle, with these temperature changes linked to ovulation. Using ovulation day as the dividing point: - From the first day of menstruation to ovulation day: The low-temperature phase lasts approximately two weeks. - From ovulation day to the first day of the next menstruation: The temperature rises by 0.3–0.5°C, marking the high-temperature phase, which also lasts about two weeks.
What else should be noted when measuring basal body temperature?
II. Precautions for Measuring Basal Body Temperature
While many know that the "lowest temperature" indicates ovulation, no one can predict whether the next day won't be even lower than their perceived "lowest temperature."
However, if the temperature rises the next day (exceeding the 24°C mark on the ovulation scale of a woman's basal thermometer), then the previous day was definitely the lowest temperature (because after ovulation, the corpus luteum forms and secretes progesterone, causing the temperature to rise). This means that intercourse can be initiated immediately that morning. If delayed until the evening, since it will be 48 hours after the previous morning, the chances of conception are lower.
While basal body temperature tracking is highly effective, it remains susceptible to external influences and can fluctuate significantly. Therefore, measurement must continue into the third morning. If the temperature remains elevated, ovulation is confirmed, and intercourse should occur that evening. Experts suggest that sexual activity spaced at least 24 hours apart enhances the likelihood of conception.
However, if the temperature drops, it indicates the previous day's high was false. In this case, avoid intercourse that night and retake the measurement on the fourth morning. If the temperature rises, have intercourse again that morning, then proceed as described above on the fifth day. This reverse-tracking method using low temperatures can easily help young couples with normal sexual function but busy schedules increase their chances of conceiving sooner.
Typically, basal body temperature should be measured between 5:00 AM and 9:00 AM daily. This timing minimizes interference from nighttime bathroom visits or movement. For women working night shifts, a consistent measurement around 5:00 PM is acceptable. While accuracy may be less reliable, maintaining a fixed schedule still provides valuable reference data.
For interpreting basal body temperature readings, since women's basal thermometers feature both Celsius and OV scales, first-time users are advised to consult the "OV" column. Its larger scale makes interpretation straightforward and simple.
Finally, it is recommended that women who need it create their own temperature calendar. Each page of the calendar should start recording from the first day of menstruation, with a "dot" placed at the center of each grid line. Connecting these dots allows for quick and clear interpretation.
