With advances in medical technology, microtia can be improved through ear reconstruction surgery. However, many people wonder: Is ear reconstruction surgery difficult? Wang Haibin, Deputy Director of the Plastic Surgery Department at Guangdong Provincial Second People's Hospital, clearly stated in an interview with Public Health Network editors that ear reconstruction is currently one of the most challenging procedures in plastic surgery.
According to Deputy Director Wang, the procedure presents numerous challenges, with the surgeon's technique and experience directly impacting success rates. The most significant challenge lies in sculpting the rib cartilage scaffold, which demands exceptional surgical carving skills. This task is considerably more complex than procedures like rib cartilage rhinoplasty, making the surgeon's overall control of the operation crucial—including assessing skin elasticity and selecting the appropriate surgical approach.
So how should the procedure be properly conducted? Deputy Director Wang Haibin explains that selecting appropriate materials is paramount. "Some private hospitals claim Medpor synthetic materials yield better results than autologous cartilage, but this assertion is inaccurate. Currently, the mainstream approach for microtia reconstruction involves sculpting and shaping autologous rib cartilage. However, this technique demands exceptionally high technical proficiency from the plastic surgeon and is not feasible for every practitioner. Some private hospitals, driven by commercial interests and staffed by inexperienced surgeons, oversimplify the procedure. Rushing into surgery not only risks failure but may also cause deeper scarring. Therefore, parents must choose a reputable hospital for microtia reconstruction."
Secondly, postoperative care must not be overlooked.Deputy Director Wang Haibin cautions that since most patients are around six or seven years old—an age marked by high energy and activity—collisions during play can easily deform or dislocate the reconstructed ear. Thus, beyond following medical instructions, parents must communicate with their child and school to ensure avoidance of contact sports like soccer or basketball.
"Patients typically undergo a recovery process after microtia reconstruction. Immediately after suture removal, swelling obscures the ear's final shape. However, this swelling gradually subsides over 3-6 months, with the ear's appearance becoming increasingly lifelike. Parents should exercise patience during this period and teach their children to protect their ears."
Furthermore, due to the significant trauma involved in microtia reconstruction—such as harvesting rib cartilage and skin grafts—scar hyperplasia prevention is crucial post-surgery. Deputy Director Wang Haibin notes dietary restrictions: patients should avoid spicy, allergenic, or irritating foods for at least six months to a year, while also abstaining from smoking and alcohol.
