Toothpaste (Fluoride)
Most commercial toothpastes contain varying levels of fluoride, which helps prevent cavities. However, fluoride is also a potential "poison." Even minimal intake can adversely affect health, potentially causing poisoning, with toxicity accumulating over time.A study by the U.S. National Cancer Institute found a correlation between fluoride exposure and annual cancer deaths in the United States.Regarding this, Dr. Wang Peng from the Department of Preventive Dentistry at Beijing Stomatological Hospital, affiliated with Capital Medical University, cautions that fluoride toothpaste must be used correctly. Adults should not exceed 3.4 milligrams daily, while children aged 7 to 15 should limit intake to 1.9 to 2.1 milligrams. Children under 3 are prone to accidentally swallowing toothpaste while brushing, so it's advisable to temporarily avoid fluoride toothpaste for them.
Nail Polish (Formaldehyde)
In recent years, nail salons have proliferated on city streets. The pursuit of beauty often causes people to overlook the pungent odor emitted by nail polish. In fact, the culprit behind this smell is formaldehyde—a substance we commonly avoid at all costs.Prolonged exposure can cause inflammation of the eyes, nose, and throat, as well as coughing, asthma attacks, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, rashes, nosebleeds, headaches, and dizziness. Since 1987, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified formaldehyde as a Group 2A carcinogen.The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has also stated that long-term, frequent use of formaldehyde-containing substances poses a potential carcinogenic risk.
Hair Dye (p-Phenylenediamine)
Fashion-conscious individuals frequently change their hair color, while middle-aged and elderly people dye their graying hair black to appear younger. However, most commercial hair dyes contain a chemical called p-phenylenediamine. While it aids in coloring and enhances vibrancy, it can also cause skin allergies and even cancer.Experts caution that heating during the dyeing process poses greater health risks. When heated, p-Phenylenediamine can penetrate the scalp into capillaries and, through the bloodstream, potentially cause blood disorders like leukemia. Additionally, it may induce skin cancer, bladder cancer, and other cancers.When dyeing hair, it's best to apply moisturizer to the skin near the hairline. This makes it easier to wash off any dye that may come into contact. If only certain sections of hair have gray patches, there's no need to dye the entire head black. Focusing on the gray areas reduces irritation and damage to the scalp.However, one essential ingredient—alcohol—may increase susceptibility to carcinogens. A 2009 study by the Australian National Cancer Institute revealed that mouthwashes containing 25% or higher alcohol content are associated with oral, tongue, and throat cancers.
Baby Products (Foaming Agents)
Baby care products should be the most trustworthy, yet they often contain harmful substances. Sodium lauryl sulfate, the most common foaming agent in cosmetics and personal care products, oxidizes into sodium laureth sulfate. Due to its low eye irritation, it's frequently used in gentle care products and baby items.However, its oxidation process generates an extremely harmful compound—1,4-dioxane. This hormone disruptor caused widespread cancer among Vietnamese military personnel after the Vietnam War. Additionally, it acts as an estrogenic substance, believed to increase the risk of breast and endometrial cancers, and is strongly linked to reduced sperm count and abnormal sperm morphology.
