Symptoms: Hoarseness, presence of purulent phlegm, minimal coughing up (mostly swallowed). Older infants may complain of sore throat; younger infants unable to verbalize discomfort often exhibit irritability, refusal to feed, and produce a "hollow" sound when coughing.
Cough Management: Parents should not attempt home remedies in this case. Seek prompt medical attention for a definitive diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
Bronchitis-Induced Cough
Symptoms: Bronchitis typically follows a cold and is caused by bacterial infection. Coughing produces phlegm and may be severe, often worsening at night with wheezing sounds. The most intense coughing usually occurs two hours after the child falls asleep or around 6 a.m.
Cough Relief: Seek hospital treatment and take pediatric cough medications prescribed by a doctor. Avoid overly sweet or salty foods, as these can worsen nighttime coughing.
Allergic Cough
Symptoms: Persistent or recurrent severe coughing, often occurring in paroxysms. More pronounced upon waking, worsening during activity or crying. Exposure to cold air triggers sneezing and coughing, but produces little phlegm.Nighttime coughing is worse than daytime, lasting for extended periods—typically over 3 months—and more common during pollen seasons.
Cough Relief: Prevent colds by keeping the child warm. Consult a doctor promptly. Babies with family histories of asthma or allergies require extra vigilance. Seek early diagnosis and treatment to prevent progression to asthma.
Friendly Reminder: Key Home Care Points for Coughing Babies
If the doctor determines the cough is a symptom of a respiratory infection, in addition to following the prescribed medication, parents should also do the following:
1. Provide a smoke-free environment and ensure good indoor air circulation. Avoid exposing the baby to irritants like gas fumes or dust particles.
2. Encourage ample rest. Elevate the baby's head and upper body with pillows during sleep to prevent mucus from dripping into the throat and causing choking. Place a pillow under the mattress at the baby's head.
3. Limit vigorous outdoor activities during coughing episodes and avoid crowded public places.
4. For children prone to recurrent coughs and illnesses, strengthen their physical exercise routine to enhance disease resistance.
5. Coughing expels moisture from the respiratory tract through rapid airflow, causing mucosal dehydration. Ensure the child drinks ample water and consumes plenty of fruits.
6. Monitor weather changes and adjust clothing promptly to keep the child comfortably warm or cool.
