When a child experiences ear pain, apply pressure to the Ermen acupoint. This is one of the more important points in the ear region, known for its ability to clear turbidity and promote clarity, open the orifices and sharpen hearing, dispel heat, and activate the meridians. Using the index finger or thumb to apply moderate pressure to this point can provide some relief for ear pain.
The Ear Gate point is located in front of the ear, just ahead of the notch above the tragus, in the slight indentation above the earlobe. It becomes more noticeable when the mouth is opened.
Warm Compress on the Ear
Soak a towel in warm water until heated, but ensure it's not too hot—children's skin is delicate. The towel should be warm but not scalding. Wring out the towel and apply it to the child's ear for 3-5 minutes before replacing it. This method uses heat to dilate blood vessels in the ear, reducing pressure and alleviating pain.
Tip
Ensure the towel is thoroughly wrung out to prevent water entering the ear and causing otitis media.
Breast Milk Drops
If the child's ear develops inflamed red spots causing pain, apply a few drops of the mother's breast milk to the painful area. Gently massage the ear with slow, light pressure to help alleviate the discomfort.
Nose Pinch and Blow Method
If ear pain stems from blocked Eustachian tubes, causing a sensation of fullness or pain, try pinching the nose and gently blowing. This equalizes pressure between the ear and outside air, opening the Eustachian tube to relieve discomfort.
Oil Drops in the Ear Canal
Place one drop of oil in the ear canal. Avoid excessive use; start with a small amount to assess suitability and effectiveness. This practice is considered a folk remedy with no conclusive scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for ear pain relief. It may work for some individuals but should be used cautiously.
Medication for Pain Relief
Given the diverse causes of ear pain and children's vulnerability, seek prompt medical attention if a child experiences severe or prolonged ear pain to prevent complications. After a doctor's examination and diagnosis, the underlying cause of the ear pain should be identified. Medication should be administered under medical guidance, and parents must never self-medicate or overuse drugs for children. Treating the root cause is essential to alleviate or eliminate the pain.
