According to China Youth Net, on March 17, an elementary school principal in Pingqiao Village, Heji Town, Binyang County, Nanning City, sexually molested a female student. Principal Zhang allegedly pulled down the pants of a sixth-grade girl at his school and took photos. It is understood that the principal has been expelled from the Communist Party, demoted, and had his teaching license revoked. The incident is currently under further investigation.
A teacher, who should serve as a role model, is supposed to protect students and allow children to grow and learn in a carefree environment. Who would have thought that the very person who extended a monstrous hand to the child, casting a shadow over their childhood, was the same teacher who appeared kind and gentle every day.In daily life, children often lack clear understanding of sexuality and remain unguarded around adults, leading to frequent incidents of child molestation. So how can we help children develop self-protection awareness?
Notice unusual behavior in children
If you observe strange behavior in a child, investigate what might be wrong.Regularly inquire about their daily experiences, including whether anyone has engaged in "kind actions," "unpleasant actions," or "secretive actions" toward them. This approach fosters more effective communication. If your child reveals inappropriate behavior or expresses distrust toward an adult, never dismiss it. Above all, trust your child.
Enhancing Children's Self-Protection Awareness
Teach children which private body parts strangers must not touch, that they should never go with strangers, and that they must seek help by finding someone or calling the police when in danger. Explain what constitutes normal behavior—like a light pat on the back or a high-five—and what is unacceptable "bad" behavior—like hitting or kicking. Also clarify what constitutes secretive behavior—actions that silence children.Teach them to immediately tell you if anyone does something inappropriate.
Teach children to recognize sexual abuse
Children cannot judge sexual abuse on their own, so parents must teach them how to recognize it.For example, a teacher patting your head as encouragement is definitely not sexual abuse. However, if a teacher touches your arm, starts touching your face, touches your buttocks, or makes you take off clothes as punishment, these are all acts of sexual abuse. Furthermore, if a teacher asks you to touch their body or their genitals, this constitutes a more severe form of sexual abuse. Children must learn to recognize these predatory behaviors.
Teaching Children to Identify Different Types of Touch
Children often lack awareness of potential dangers from those around them and may not understand what constitutes appropriate touch. Therefore, it's crucial to help them learn to distinguish between different types of touch—such as friendly touch, inappropriate or harmful touch, and touch they can't immediately categorize as good or bad. Good touch is what children enjoy, like hugs and kisses from parents or holding hands with friends.Uncertain touch is confusing or uncomfortable. Inappropriate or harmful touch is what children want to stop—primarily hitting, slapping, kicking, or touching private areas. Children must remember these distinctions.
