The Dangers of Pediatric Allergic Rhinitis: Timely Prevention is Paramount

Air pollution has led to many infants developing allergic rhinitis, causing significant distress for parents. Untreated, its consequences can be severe. Risks of pediatric allergic rhinitis: 1. Allergic rhinitis obstructs nasal passages, impairing breathing.Persistent congestion may cause chronic oxygen deprivation, significantly impacting the child's physical development—particularly neurological and cerebral maturation.
2. Prolonged pediatric allergic rhinitis can lead to reduced intelligence, impaired memory, poor concentration, and slowed reaction times.
3. It may cause adenoid hypertrophy, forcing children to breathe through their mouths while sleeping. The resulting airflow pressure can push teeth outward, narrow and elevate the hard palate, ultimately altering facial features and creating an "adenoid facies."
4. Chronic nasal obstruction and habitual mouth breathing can cause underdeveloped maxillary bones and less prominent zygomatic arches, resulting in a dull-looking facial expression known as adenoid facies. Children with nasal congestion often push their nose upward with their hands, forming a horizontal crease on the bridge of the nose called the allergic nasal crease.Some pediatric allergic rhinitis patients may exhibit blue patches or dark circles under the eyes, termed allergic pigmentation. This occurs when prolonged swelling or edema of nasal and sinus mucosa compresses veins, obstructing venous return.
Active prevention is essential to avoid childhood allergic rhinitis:
First, maintain indoor dryness:
Parents should keep indoor humidity between 40%–50%, ideally using air purifiers with filters;
Second, maintain indoor cleanliness:
Keeping the home clean prevents infections from cockroaches or dust mites. Regularly clean the following areas and items:
(1) Fabric items: Bedding, mattresses, curtains, clothing, quilts, carpets, plush toys, and upholstered furniture should be cleaned regularly;
(2) Utensils: Seal food promptly after meals, promptly clean up debris from floors and trash bags, and scrub dishes and stovetops with hot water to prevent dirty utensils from attracting cockroaches;
(3) Spaces: Thoroughly inspect drains, wall cracks, floor cavities, and windows. Clean bathrooms and trash bins with bleach or other cleaning agents to prevent cockroach entry.
Third, Breastfeeding:
Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for at least the first three months after birth. This avoids exposure to additives in formula or complementary foods while helping strengthen the infant's immune system.
Fifth, eliminate mold growth:
Mold spores can trigger heightened sensitivity in babies with allergic rhinitis, hindering recovery and potentially worsening symptoms. Parents should proactively address mold-prone areas in daily life:
(1) Shade-loving plants: Avoid growing shade-loving plants that require frequent watering indoors or on balconies, as damp soil can harbor significant mold growth;
(2) Moldy items: Discard moldy clothing, carpets, old newspapers, food, etc., promptly or treat them appropriately to remove mold. Maintain dryness and implement moisture prevention measures to avoid mold growth.
