Pediatric TCM massage is an external therapeutic method guided by fundamental TCM theory. It applies techniques to specific acupoints or areas on the child's body surface based on their physiological and pathological characteristics to prevent illness, treat disease, or promote growth and cognitive development. Pediatric massage has a broad scope of application, treating various conditions such as indigestion, vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, abdominal pain, constipation, mouth ulcers, colds, fever, and cough. While pediatric massage has broad applicability, certain contraindications exist.
Contraindications and Precautions for Pediatric Massage
Contraindications: Avoid massage when the child has fractures, dislocations, skin ulcers, or traumatic bleeding.
Precautions for Pediatric Massage: Practitioners should maintain a gentle and attentive demeanor, apply precise acupoint selection, employ skilled techniques, and perform treatments diligently. The treatment room must be well-ventilated, quiet, clean, and maintained at a comfortable temperature—neither too cold nor too hot. After massage, protect the child from drafts to prevent re-exposure to external pathogens that could worsen the condition.Wash hands and trim nails before treatment. In cold weather, ensure hands are warm to prevent frightening the child and complicating the procedure. Position the child comfortably and naturally, whether sitting or lying down. For both genders, prioritize acupoints on the left hand. Apply appropriate pressure evenly. Reserve techniques that may cause fear or crying for last.To prevent skin abrasions and enhance therapeutic efficacy, apply talcum powder, baby oil, or vegetable oil to the treatment area beforehand. This lubricates the skin and improves the effectiveness of the techniques.
