Proper urination in men can reduce the risk of various diseases, including bladder cancer, prostate cancer, rectal cancer, and chronic prostatitis. Elderly men may adopt a squatting position when urinating. Research on male anatomy indicates that after urination, the internal and external sphincters of the urethra close, forming a sealed cavity in the prostatic urethra.

Older men may squat when urinating.
Data indicates that men who frequently squat while urinating have a 50% lower risk of developing rectal cancer, bladder cancer, and prostate cancer compared to those who stand. This is because squatting triggers a series of muscle movements and associated reflexes that accelerate the elimination of intestinal waste, shorten stool retention time in the intestines, and reduce the absorption of carcinogens by the intestines. Additionally, elderly men should adopt the squatting position when urinating at night to avoid orthostatic syncope.
Urinate Every Hour
The incidence of bladder cancer is directly proportional to the duration urine remains in the bladder. This is because urine contains a carcinogenic chemical that damages bladder muscle fibers, promoting cancerous changes.
Regardless of urge, individuals should increase urination frequency. The most scientifically sound approach is to urinate once per hour.
Perineal Squeeze After Urination
Men have longer urethras, making incomplete emptying common and increasing urinary tract infection risk. How can residual urine be fully expelled?Yang Yushu introduced two methods: ① After urination, gently squeeze the perineum—the area between the scrotum and anus—with your fingers. This not only expels residual urine but also offers some benefit in treating chronic prostatitis. ② Regularly perform Kegel exercises to strengthen the contractile force of the perineal and urethral muscles, thereby minimizing residual urine in the bladder.
Avoid Sitting Immediately After Urination
Studies on male anatomy indicate that after urination, the internal and external sphincter muscles of the urethra close, forming a sealed cavity in the prostatic urethra. Sitting down immediately increases pressure within this cavity, causing residual urine to reflux and potentially triggering prostatitis. Therefore, men should remain standing for 3-5 minutes after urination before sitting.
