Upon discovering the "ketogenic diet" online—promising weight loss while still eating meat—the young man seized the opportunity. After two weeks, he experienced nausea, dizziness, and blurred vision. Hospital tests revealed metabolic acidosis. "I'll never attempt reckless dieting again," said Mr. Wang on the 17th, still visibly shaken despite recovering from critical condition.
Mr. Wang, 25, resides in Donghu Village, Wuhan. He loves meat but dislikes exercise, developing a beer belly at a young age. The thought of cutting back on meat to lose weight always made him back down. Before the New Year, a friend told him the "ketogenic diet" was trending—promising weight loss without dietary restrictions. After researching online, he discovered this method supposedly burned fat without exercise while allowing unlimited meat consumption. Eager to try it, he began the regimen.
Mr. Wang consumed large amounts of meat daily, avoiding all grains, fruits, beverages, alcohol, and sweets. After two weeks, his weight remained unchanged, and he experienced dizziness, nausea, and occasional flashes of darkness before his eyes. On the morning of the 15th, he visited Wuhan Donghu Hospital, where tests confirmed ketonuria and developing acidosis.
Ma Gang, the attending internal medicine associate chief physician, explained that prolonged high-fat diets cause incomplete fat breakdown in the body. Large amounts of ketone bodies accumulate and cannot be utilized. Ketone bodies are acidic substances; persistently high levels can cause nausea and vomiting. In severe cases, it can lead to acidosis, coma, and even life-threatening conditions.
Ma Gang emphasized that the ketogenic diet for weight loss must be undertaken under the guidance of a professional nutritionist. Due to individual differences in physical constitution, it is not suitable for everyone.
Ma Gang reminded that there are no shortcuts to weight loss. By "controlling food intake, increasing physical activity, and maintaining balanced nutrition," weight can be effectively managed. Additionally, some individuals experience obesity due to endocrine issues, which requires timely medical attention and medication.
These extreme weight loss methods are inadvisable:
1. Eating only fruits and vegetables
While vegetables and fruits are indeed high-fiber, low-calorie foods, most have a cooling nature. Even if cooking can mitigate this, long-term consumption of only fruits and vegetables can lead to weakness, reduced stamina, menstrual irregularities in women, and even infertility.
2. Eliminating all fats
One gram of fat contains 9 calories—a weight loss enemy! Do you think so? In fact, fats are essential nutrients for the human body. They protect internal organs and maintain body temperature. Without sufficient fat intake, you may experience constipation, and your organs could be directly exposed to external impacts, leading to injury.
During weight loss, incorporating moderate amounts of high-protein, low-fat foods won't hinder your progress. Examples include fish rich in unsaturated fatty acids and nuts packed with vitamin E and healthy fats—both excellent choices for weight management.
3. Avoid Starch
Stop equating starch with obesity! In reality, the glucose produced when starch breaks down is the primary energy source for bodily functions. Additionally, starch intake helps the brain produce serotonin, stabilizing mood and enhancing focus. Insufficient starch intake disrupts organ function, making weight loss goals unattainable.
Moreover, starchy foods vary in quality. Whole-grain starches are rich in B vitamins and dietary fiber, and regular consumption can reduce body fat and lower BMI. Root vegetables like yams and lotus roots contain soluble fiber that provides strong satiety while also aiding digestion—making them ideal choices during weight loss.
4. Weight loss vs. fat loss
Methods like inducing diarrhea or drinking coffee to shed water weight can harm your body! While black coffee does have diuretic effects that help eliminate excess fluids, the goal of weight loss is to reduce fat, not deplete essential bodily fluids.Furthermore, long-term excessive caffeine intake can lead to dependency and cause symptoms like palpitations and insomnia. Significant fluid loss also disrupts metabolism, making weight loss harder.
While extreme weight loss methods may yield rapid results, the ensuing health risks are immeasurable. A balanced diet combined with a healthy lifestyle remains the most effective approach to weight management.
