Laboratory studies confirm that blood-sucking insects, including mosquitoes, never regurgitate previously ingested blood during feeding.
Furthermore, there is no need to worry about residual blood in a mosquito's mouthparts. The amount of blood left in a mosquito's mouth is minuscule—only 0.00004 milliliters. To cause HIV infection, a mosquito would need to repeatedly bite between an HIV-positive individual and a healthy person 2,800 times. This is because a certain quantity of HIV must enter the body to cause infection.First, the viral load in an HIV-positive person's blood does not remain consistently high over long periods.Second, mosquitoes' mouthparts cannot hold much blood. Third, HIV cannot replicate within mosquitoes. Therefore, the amount of HIV on the mouthparts of a mosquito that has bitten an HIV-positive person is far too small to infect the next person it bites. The quantity of HIV entering the human body through the bite wound is insufficient to cause infection.That minuscule viral load is far below the threshold for transmission. After feeding on a human, a mosquito must digest the ingested blood before seeking another host. During this period, HIV cannot survive within the mosquito's body; any present virus would be metabolized as food.In summary, there is no need to worry about contracting HIV through mosquito bites. The fundamental measures to prevent HIV transmission through sexual contact include maintaining personal integrity, strictly avoiding drug use, adhering to sexual ethics, and avoiding direct contact with bodily fluids such as blood, semen, and breast milk from HIV-positive individuals.
