Eyebrow tattooing is a cosmetic surgical technique that involves penetrating the skin with needles to deposit metallic or plant-based pigments into the dermal layer, permanently shaping the eyebrows. This method gained significant popularity in China during the late 1980s and early 1990s, with at least one-third of urban Chinese women opting for this form of permanent makeup. It remains widely practiced in other countries and regions as well.
(1) Before the procedure, the tattoo needle must be sterilized by soaking in disinfectant solution. Cotton balls used during the process must be sterilized, and pigment must be single-use per client.
(3) The practitioner holds the eyebrow tattoo machine or needle, dips it into a small amount of eyebrow tattoo solution, and repeatedly punctures the skin along the drawn eyebrow shape. This carries the solution containing micro-titanium dioxide particles and food-grade pigments into the dermis layer of the skin.Apply consistent pressure during the procedure, maintaining appropriate depth. Insufficient depth may result in poor color retention, while excessive depth can cause pinpoint bleeding, impair color retention, and increase the risk of color fading.(4) During tattooing, use the dot technique for the brow head and the upper/lower edges of the eyebrow. For the middle section and tail, employ either the dot technique or the dot-and-stroke method. Pigmentation should be slightly lighter at the brow head and tail, while the central part of the eyebrow shape may be slightly darker. The upper and lower edges, as well as the brow head, should not appear overly neat. The brow head must not extend beyond the natural position of the existing eyebrow hair, otherwise it may appear unnatural.
(5) During the eyebrow tattooing process, repeatedly wipe away excess pigment and exudate with a cotton ball dipped in saline solution to facilitate observation of the coloring.
(6) Anesthesia is generally not used for eyebrow tattooing. The recipient will only feel a slight stinging sensation, and the level of pain is entirely tolerable.For individuals with heightened sensitivity to pain, applying 1% lidocaine-soaked cotton pads to the eyebrow area during the procedure can significantly reduce discomfort.
(7) Both the practitioner and client should continuously monitor the coloration and shape during the tattooing process. Any unsatisfactory areas can be corrected immediately through further tattooing until the desired result is achieved. Each eyebrow typically takes 15–20 minutes to complete.Immediately after tattooing, the eyebrow color may appear slightly darker. After approximately one week, when a thin layer of scab peels off, the true color will be revealed, appearing realistic and natural. If the color seems too light after scab removal, a second touch-up session can be performed to achieve a more perfect eyebrow shape. (8) After completing the tattooing, apply a layer of antibiotic ointment to the area to prevent infection and the formation of thick scabs.
