Is eyebrow tattooing considered cosmetic surgery? Many people don't think so, viewing it as a minor procedure that can be handled at beauty salons. In reality, procedures penetrating below the dermis fall under medical aesthetics. Eyebrow, eyeliner, and lip line tattoos all penetrate beneath the dermis, thus naturally belonging to the medical aesthetics category. So, can eyebrow tattooing transmit infectious diseases?
As is widely known, eyebrow and eyeliner tattooing involves piercing the skin with needles to inject non-absorbable, non-harmful metallic oxide pigments into the dermis, causing skin discoloration.During the tattooing process, the needle tip repeatedly contacts the client's blood and tears, then dips into containers holding tattoo ink. If the needles are not thoroughly sterilized or the ink containers are not replaced and disinfected, cross-infection can easily occur when the needle is used on the next client.Hepatitis B primarily spreads through bodily fluids like blood and saliva. Even trace amounts of HBsAg-positive blood entering the body can cause infection. When individuals with hepatitis undergo eyebrow or eyeliner tattooing, the needles inevitably become contaminated with minute viral particles. The hepatitis B virus is resistant to alcohol and Lysol disinfectants, requiring prolonged exposure to high temperatures and pressure for complete eradication.
It also facilitates transmission of bacterial conjunctivitis and trachoma. Furthermore, HIV, syphilis, and tuberculosis can all affect the eyes through blood, causing viral infection. Gonorrhea can spread via ocular secretions, while sepsis is transmitted through blood. During eyebrow or eyeliner tattooing, skin breaks and bleeding create opportunities for infection by these diseases.
While not everyone who gets eyebrow or eyeliner tattoos will be infected, one must never take chances. Ophthalmologists and dermatologists generally discourage these invasive cosmetic procedures. However, if you choose to undergo them, it is imperative to select a beauty salon or hospital with well-equipped medical facilities and excellent hygiene standards to avoid contracting other diseases due to inadequate instrument sterilization.
