Does a Stable Relationship Contribute to Mental Well-being?

After a breakup, feeling down and discouraged is perfectly normal. However, women's mental health tends to deteriorate with each subsequent breakup. Men, on the other hand, experience the opposite effect. Men who have been through two or more breakups often exhibit excellent mental health, sometimes even healthier than other men.
Heartbreak has long been regarded as the most devastating emotional trauma, causing unbearable pain for both men and women. In reality, many men develop psychological issues due to broken relationships and resort to extreme measures to cope with their suffering.
However, recent research from a British university may challenge this conventional wisdom. They suggest that for men, experiencing more breakups may actually lead to greater psychological resilience.
Men's Mental Health Correlates Positively with Breakup Frequency
Researchers from Queen Mary University of London's "Impact of Breakups on Mental Health in Both Genders" project discovered that when examining the psychological effects of romantic relationships alone, women in cohabiting relationships were more prone to anxiety and other mental health issues than men.
This may stem from women feeling greater insecurity about financial stability and assets, while men are more concerned about being tied down for life.
Post-breakup emotional lows and depression are normal for both genders, but women take significantly longer to recover from emotional wounds. Moreover, their mental health deteriorates progressively with each subsequent breakup.
Men, however, show the opposite pattern. Those who have experienced two or more breakups often exhibit excellent mental health, even outperforming other men.
Stable relationships foster healthy mental states in both partners.
While research indicates starkly different impacts of breakups on male and female mental health, the criteria for achieving optimal mental health in both partners align with traditional understanding.
That is, "Individuals in stable romantic relationships or happy families often exhibit optimal mental health; conversely, painful breakups are the primary culprit behind mental health issues, causing greater harm to women in particular."
Psychological experts note that for most people, enduring the emotional blow of a breakup is never pleasant and invariably has a negative impact on mental health. Therefore, when you or a family member experiences heartbreak, timely self-regulation or seeking professional help is crucial to prevent psychological issues like depression.
How a True Man Handles Rejection Gracefully
When feelings run deep, the desire for closer contact is natural. However, not everyone desires excessive physical contact, and some may even strongly resist it. This inevitably leads to awkward rejection scenarios. When facing such situations, taking it too seriously is a losing game! Convince yourself mentally that it's just a harmless joke. It's best to laugh it off; otherwise, the aftermath will leave you feeling constrained and unable to interact normally with the other person.
1. Blush, but don't panic
Stay calm, dead calm. When awkwardness strikes, a momentary flush is unavoidable, but panic is absolutely forbidden. It solves nothing and only makes you seem weak.
2. Avoid hasty explanations—the sooner you admit fault, the more likely you are to be misunderstood.
3. Embrace self-deprecating humor.
Since the awkwardness is unavoidable, muster the courage to confront reality head-on—even challenge the awkwardness directly.
4. Play dumb and hide tangible awkwardness behind feigned ignorance. While we don't literally become fools, employing special tactics to escape trouble in critical moments isn't a bad idea.
5. Quickly exit the scene. If you can't beat 'em, leave 'em. Retreat is the wisest strategy. If you genuinely lack the courage or ability to handle an awkward situation, your best option is to leave the scene as quickly as possible. For those who are naturally timid yet highly sensitive, anticipating the possibility of awkwardness or departing at the first sign of trouble is a brilliant strategy.
6. Turn the tables and turn disadvantage into advantage
Advantage and disadvantage are always relative. By identifying the key points, transforming disadvantage into advantage is entirely possible.
7. Redirect the Awkwardness
Medicine has a concept called pain diversion: when an overwhelming pain is replaced by a more manageable one, the original pain gradually fades under the influence of the latter. This principle applies to self-regulation during awkward moments. However, be mindful that the redirected awkwardness should be a well-intentioned opportunity to lighten the mood.
8. Feigning Psychological Vulnerability
People generally sympathize with the weak. When awkwardness arises, you should immediately react with exaggerated emotion—whether deep regret or intense distress. In short, you must make yourself appear psychologically fragile, as if the recent incident has severely wounded your self-esteem. Typically, upon witnessing your "plight," others will cease their relentless pursuit, and the awkwardness will dissipate.
