Is washing your face with your hands healthier than using a towel?
From a health perspective, washing your face with your hands is preferable. The skin on your hands is smoother and finer, causing less friction on your facial skin and minimizing damage to the epidermis. After washing, simply pat dry with a towel to remove water droplets. If you're not going out, you can also let your face air-dry naturally.Since towels are typically hung in the bathroom—a relatively humid environment—it's important to regularly air them out in the sun. Sunlight helps kill bacteria on the towel, reducing the risk of skin inflammation.
Proper Facial Cleansing Method
First: Thoroughly washing hands before cleansing is crucial. Before each wash, always cleanse hands with hand soap or bar soap (when traveling). Gently lather hands (palm and back) for 30 seconds, then rinse thoroughly under running water before proceeding to facial cleansing.
Second: Lather cleanser thoroughly, massage gently, and avoid sensitive areas
Combination to oily skin types typically use foaming cleansers, such as Vichy's Purete Thermale Foaming Cleanser or Cleansing Oil.After lathering, start at the forehead and move downward. Regardless of the area, limit massaging to no more than thirty strokes and avoid excessive pressure, as this can thicken the stratum corneum.
Facial Massage Technique:
For the forehead, use both hands to draw outward circles. Do the same for the cheeks, paying special attention to the T-zone. Move along the sides of the nostrils (up and down), from the nostrils to the tip of the nose, and from the bridge of the nose to between the eyebrows (up and down). Pucker your lips and apply circular motions combined with up-and-down strokes. Finally, circle around the eyebrows and outer corners of the eyes. The T-zone is highly prone to breakouts, but avoid vigorous scrubbing due to its sensitivity.
Third: Adjust washing frequency based on personal needs.
Trust your own skin's feedback—it knows best. Rather than blindly following beauty experts, ask yourself: Does this feel comfortable? Does this method truly work for me?
Recommended washing routine:
1. Generally once in the morning and evening; once in severe winter, three times in hot summer.
2. If outdoors for extended periods and your face feels dusty, wash twice.
3. In spring and autumn, use a milder lotion-type cleanser in the morning and a stronger foaming cleanser at night. Moisturizing is paramount.
Fourth: Alternate warm and cold water during cleansing to exercise your skin. Use warm water to open pores, gently massage with cleanser to lift impurities, then rinse thoroughly. Follow with cold water to tighten pores—always finish with cold water, no matter how chilly.
Fifth:Never use hot water. Washing your face isn't giving your skin a sauna. The key difference between warm and hot water is that warm water allows facial cells to relax upon contact, while hot water directly causes enlarged pores! Sixth: Use running water whenever possible. When rinsing off cleanser, wash your hands thoroughly first, then turn on the faucet and cup running water over your face.
Seventh: Avoid using hands or towels for rinsing
Except when applying cleanser directly to your face, treat your skin like delicate, thin porcelain. Minimize contact with hands or towels, and when touching is necessary, be extremely gentle!
Eighth: Pat dry with a pure cotton towel
After washing, gently press a soft, dry pure cotton towel against your face, allowing the towel's fibers to naturally absorb moisture.
Ninth: Towel Usage Guidelines
1. Towels must be washed weekly. Lather them thoroughly with soap, scrubbing vigorously as if they hadn't been washed in years, then rinse clean with water.
2. If possible, boil the towel after washing. Use a dedicated clean basin or pot and boil it on the stove like you would ribs. Boil for 3-5 minutes.
3. Dry towels in sunlight; UV rays kill bacteria.
4. Flip the towel to a clean side when using.
