Washing your face is the simplest routine imaginable. Yet, Indian immunology experts recently identified "9 Common Facial Cleansing Mistakes to Avoid," highlighting how improper washing can cause dryness, wrinkles, acne, rashes, and even accelerate aging. So, what are the most common mistakes?
1. Not washing hands before cleansing."Wash your hands before washing your face" is an important step often overlooked by most people. Many believe that washing their face naturally cleans their hands as well, but this is not the case. This practice makes it easier for dirt, bacteria, and oils from your hands to transfer to your face.
2. Using water that's too hot or too cold. Avoid using water that's excessively hot or cold. Water that's too hot strips away the skin's natural oils, leaving the face feeling dry. Conversely, using ice-cold water can irritate the skin and damage capillaries. Washing your face with lukewarm water around 35°C (95°F) helps maintain skin moisture and prevents irritation.
3. Not applying moisturizer immediately after washing.Apply moisturizer within 3 minutes after washing, while skin is still damp. Waiting until skin dries makes it harder for skincare ingredients to absorb, potentially causing excess oiliness or roughness. 4. Sharing facial cleanser with family members. Everyone has different skin types, so choose cleansers suited to your specific needs. Otherwise, it may lead to dryness and redness.Cleansing products only need to remove dirt, bacteria, and excess oil.
5. Exfoliating too frequently. Exfoliation smooths the skin. However, over-exfoliating or using coarse scrubs can damage the skin. Limit facial exfoliation to once a week, no more than twice.
6. Neglecting the hairline. After using cleansers like facial wash, rinse thoroughly—especially along the hairline, neck, and sides of the nose. Residual chemicals can clog pores, cause dryness, or trigger allergies if not fully removed.
7. Rubbing the eye area too hard. Many people vigorously scrub their faces while washing. But the skin around the eyes is extremely sensitive; gently press with fingertips instead.
Additionally, avoid using strongly alkaline soaps or cleansers around the eyes.Additionally, avoid using strongly alkaline soaps or cleansers on the delicate skin around the eyes.
8. Dry gently after washing. Avoid vigorously rubbing your face with a towel after washing. Instead, pat your face dry first, then use a clean, soft towel to gently absorb excess moisture. Also, avoid sharing towels with family members to prevent cross-contamination of bacteria. Keep towels away from areas too close to the sink.
9. Wash your face only once daily. Infrequent washing can lead to bacterial infections on the face and, in severe cases, skin conditions like acne. Wash twice daily—morning and night. Evening cleansing removes accumulated dirt and grime, while morning cleansing removes oils and bacteria that build up overnight. However, those with dry skin may suffice with plain water in the morning.
