As the saying goes, "Toothache isn't a disease, but when it strikes, it's truly agonizing." Dental care demands our full attention, and professional teeth cleaning offers the most direct and effective method for maintaining oral hygiene. Yet many harbor misconceptions about this procedure. Thorough brushing alone isn't enough Many believe diligent brushing solves all problems. Experts explain that even meticulous brushing inevitably leaves hard-to-reach areas.Even teeth that appear clean on the surface often reveal plaque and soft deposits during oral exams, which can harden into tartar over time. Generally, a dental checkup every six months to a year is recommended, followed by consulting your dentist about the need for scaling. Scaling isn't suitable for everyone—those with systemic blood disorders or women during menstruation should avoid it.If gums are red, swollen, or painful, it's advisable to first take oral anti-inflammatory medication and use mouthwash for several days before undergoing scaling.
Those with significant tartar buildup may benefit from two consecutive scaling sessions.
Many worry about bleeding during scaling. Regarding this, Wang Chenbao, Associate Chief Physician at the Dental Department of Chaoyang Hospital's Jingxi Branch, explains that bleeding during scaling typically indicates underlying gum issues. When the dentist removes thick tartar, even slight irritation can cause bleeding. In reality, these individuals often experience persistent gum redness, swelling, and bleeding. For those with significant tartar buildup, two sessions are generally recommended. During the initial cleaning, tartar is not fully removed. After returning home and reducing inflammation, a second cleaning minimizes gum damage.
Concerns that scaling might widen gaps between teeth are unfounded, experts clarify, as this only occurs in individuals with numerous teeth. Teeth naturally have spaces between them, which may even widen due to gum recession. However, tartar buildup and gum inflammation cause localized gum swelling that temporarily fills these gaps, creating the illusion of tightly packed teeth.Once tartar is removed during scaling, gum swelling gradually subsides, making gaps more noticeable.
Additionally, some individuals may experience a stinging sensation when exposed to cold, hot, acidic, or sweet stimuli for a period after scaling. Wang Chenbao explains this is normal. Tartar acts as a barrier against external stimuli; once removed, teeth become exposed to the environment, leading to sensitivity. For healthy teeth, this sensitivity typically subsides within one to two weeks after scaling.
Scaling Does Not Whiten Teeth
Some people hope scaling will whiten their teeth, but experts clarify this is a misconception. Natural tooth color should have a slight yellowish tint, not the stark whiteness seen in toothpaste advertisements. Daily use inevitably causes pigment accumulation on tooth surfaces, affecting appearance. One goal of scaling is to remove these stains as thoroughly as possible. Consequently, after scaling, teeth reveal their natural color—a pale yellow hue. Overall, teeth may appear slightly whiter post-scaling, but the whitening effect is extremely limited.
