What are the side effects of the foods we commonly eat? The foods we regularly consume can impact our health. Among these side effects, some are severe, some are unsettling, and some can be downright embarrassing. So, what are the side effects of the foods we commonly eat?
What are the side effects of the foods we commonly eat?
1. Body Odor
Research indicates that red meat can negatively affect body odor.
2. Acne (Pimples)
High saturated fats and trans fatty acids increase subcutaneous fat, which can trigger acne flare-ups. Scientists also note that frequent milk consumption may contribute to higher acne incidence.
3. Heartburn and Acid Reflux
Numerous foods can trigger heartburn. Some cause weakness in the lower esophageal sphincter (the muscle that allows food to pass from the esophagus to the stomach), leading to higher-than-normal stomach acid levels in certain situations. This significantly increases the likelihood of acid reflux. The most common heartburn-inducing foods include citrus fruits, fried and fatty foods, vinegar, tomatoes, and chocolate.
Animal-based foods are high in cholesterol. Consuming these foods raises blood cholesterol levels, increasing the risk of heart disease. Relevant foods include: beef, pork, and lamb brains; organ meats (liver, kidney, spleen); and eggs.
High animal protein and low fiber intake can contribute to kidney stone formation. Research suggests increasing dietary calcium while reducing salt and animal protein consumption. Limit foods rich in oxalic acid—such as spinach, cocoa, nuts, chili peppers, and tea—as oxalic acid binds with calcium to form insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that are excreted in feces.
4. Allergies
Allergies are the primary adverse effect of food. Theoretically, any food can cause an allergic reaction. However, in practice, 90% of allergic reactions are triggered by the following eight food groups: milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts (including Brazil nuts, walnuts, almonds, and pecans), fish, shellfish, soybeans, and wheat.
Overgrowth of normal yeast in the body can lead to yeast infections, and foods achieve this by affecting yeast levels (by providing nutrients to yeast). Foods that may contribute to yeast infections include: sugar, vinegar, refined carbohydrates, baking powder, and foods rich in yeast.
5. Cognitive Impairment and Memory Decline
Research from Rush University Medical Center in Chicago indicates that excessive copper intake in the diet, particularly among older adults, can slow learning and thinking abilities while causing rapid memory decline.
What side effects do common foods have? High-salt, high-sugar, and high-sodium foods can cause edema. The body requires a certain salt concentration to maintain internal equilibrium. However, excessive salt intake elevates this concentration. To dilute the high salt levels, the body retains large amounts of water, leading to edema. Foods may trigger not only migraines but also tension headaches—a sensation akin to wearing a tight headband, causing pain throughout the entire head. These headaches occur when chemicals in the brain or changes in blood vessel size trigger pain. For some individuals, high levels of tyramine and aniline urea in foods cause increased blood flow to the brain, resulting in headaches. Common headache-triggering foods include aged cheeses, beer, red wine, chocolate, and foods containing nitrites.
