Having a high, slender nose can enhance a woman's beauty. A hump nose, however, is one of the main culprits that detracts from a woman's appearance, which is why many beauty-conscious women seek to correct it. So how is hump nose correction surgery performed? What should be noted before and after the procedure? Below we will explain each point in detail.
What is a hump nose?
A hump nose typically manifests as a broad nasal bridge, wide nostrils, and an elongated nasal tip. This appearance can convey a harsh, unapproachable impression, particularly undermining the feminine qualities of softness and rounded features.Hump noses are often congenital, resulting from localized tissue overgrowth during development. Occasionally, they stem from distorted healing of nasal bone trauma or subsequent bone callus proliferation. Beyond aesthetic concerns, they pose no functional impairment—affecting neither smell, speech, nor breathing.
The hump nose features an upward bulge along the nasal bridge, resembling a camel's hump—hence its name. Severity varies among individuals. Often accompanied by an elongated nose and a downward-curving tip resembling an "eagle's beak," it is also termed an aquiline nose. Most hump noses result from excessive congenital nasal bone development, though a minority stem from post-traumatic nasal bone displacement or subsequent bone callus hyperplasia.
Viewed from the side, the nose lacks smooth contours, with the abrupt hump resembling a cap, conveying an image of stubbornness and aggressiveness. From the front, the excessively drooping nasal tip forms a "hooked" shape. In Western depictions, this often symbolizes a cunning sorcerer, conveying a sense of deceitfulness and craftiness.
What is hump nose correction?
1. Non-osteotomy methods employ a butterfly incision. For silicone implant augmentation, an incision along the upper inner edge of the nasal vestibule may be used. For mild Type I humps, the primary approach involves elevating the nasal tip. The preferred material is an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) reinforced implant. The key technique involves: first placing a ruler along the nasal root and across the nasal bridge to measure the required tip height, length, and shape from the side.
For mild Type II cases, reduce the thickness of the central portion of the silicone or expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) implant corresponding to the hump area, flattening only the ends of the nasal hump. For patients with concomitant long nose deformity, traditional long nose correction techniques can achieve results equivalent to ePTFE tip augmentation.
2. Osteotomy primarily utilizes an intranasal incision between the alar cartilage and lateral nasal cartilage. For cases with long nose deformity, a butterfly incision may be employed, but its lower edge must extend to the columellar base.
Begin by dissecting along the cartilage surface and subperiosteally beneath the nasal bone from the incision, extending upward to the nasal root and laterally to the maxillary frontal process. First, chisel and trim the protruding portion of the nasal hump, including the nasal bone, septal cartilage, greater alar cartilage, and lesser alar cartilage. Then perform an oblique lateral osteotomy of the nasal bone.
What should be noted before and after hump nose correction surgery?
1. Preoperative Considerations
A comprehensive physical examination is required before hump nose surgery to ensure good health, absence of infectious diseases or other systemic inflammation, and no anticoagulant disorders. Since the severity of hump deformity varies among individuals, a personalized surgical plan must be developed with appropriate corrective techniques. The design must consider the overall harmony between the nose and facial features, ensuring the hump is removed evenly and smoothly. Additionally, women should avoid scheduling hump reduction surgery during menstruation. Refrain from wearing makeup before surgery to prevent chemical reactions between cosmetics and medications that could compromise treatment outcomes.
2. Postoperative Care Guidelines
Postoperative care is crucial after hump nose surgery. Antibiotics should be taken for 3-5 days to prevent infection. Avoid touching the incision site with hands and keep the area dry. Early localized swelling is normal and can be reduced with ice packs under medical guidance.Avoid spicy or irritating foods until full recovery. Refrain from applying pressure to the nasal area to prevent interference with healing.
