After a day of work or study, many people experience not only back and waist pain but also aching, swollen legs. Over time, this can impair leg metabolism and circulation, potentially leading to severe swelling and muscle laxity. Leg massage can prevent these issues, relieving fatigue while also slimming and beautifying the legs.
Which acupoints should be targeted for leg massage?
Chengfu (ST28): Located at the midpoint of the gluteal crease. Massaging this point helps slim legs and firm buttocks.
Wuming (ST34): Situated at the midpoint of the inner thigh. Stimulating this point boosts metabolism, prevents leg swelling, and tones thigh muscles.
Xuehai (SP10): With leg extended, locate three finger-widths (index, middle, and ring fingers together) above the inner knee hollow. Massaging this point prevents calf swelling; stimulating the left Xuehai also alleviates menstrual cramps in women.
Weizhong (BL40): Located at the center of the popliteal fossa, massaging this point boosts calf metabolism.
Chengshan Point: Stand on tiptoes slightly. The point at the end of the raised muscle on the back of the calf is Chengshan. Massaging this point boosts metabolism and relieves leg fatigue and swelling.
Sanyinjiao (SP6): Located four finger-widths (index, middle, ring, and little fingers together) above the highest point of the inner ankle bone. Massaging this point improves liver and kidney function, reducing calf swelling.
Jiaoxi (ST37): Located in the depression at the center of the transverse crease where the calf meets the top of the foot. Massaging this point alleviates leg swelling and coldness.
Taixi (KI3): Located in the central depression of the medial malleolus. Massaging this point helps tighten ankles, slim legs, and prevent cold sensitivity.
Yongquan (KI1): Located at the depression where the "人" pattern lines intersect on the sole. Massaging this point regulates the autonomic nervous system, reducing leg edema while also clearing the mind and preventing dizziness.
Futū Point: Location: When your arms hang naturally at your sides, your middle fingers naturally rest on the Futū points. Pressing them may cause a slight aching sensation. Regularly massaging these points effectively reduces thigh fat, particularly on the front of the thighs. Additionally, Futū points alleviate lower back pain and cold knees. Hold each press for 5 seconds, aiming for 10 minutes daily.
Fengshi Point: Located on the outer thigh. To locate it, stand upright with your feet shoulder-width apart. Place your middle finger on the outer thigh bone and move it slightly upward. The point where your middle finger meets the outer thigh bone is Fengshi.
Xuanzhong Point: On the calf. First locate the tip of your outer ankle bone. Then move upward along the bone on your foot about three cun (Note: Three cun is the width of your index, middle, ring, and little fingers combined). Generally, four finger widths is sufficient. You'll find a slight depression.
Zusanli (ST36): Located three finger-widths below the kneecap. This remarkable point is traditionally believed to stimulate gastrointestinal motility. It also sculpts calf contours—massage daily for ten minutes, and within days, notice smoother calf lines below the knee. Avoid pressing during menstruation.
Fengchi Point: Located on the Gallbladder Meridian of Foot-Shaoyang, this point refreshes the mind and alleviates eye strain. Method: Sit upright with thumbs on both Fengchi points. Tilt head back and apply circular pressure for 1 minute until a distinct aching sensation arises. Repeat 5 times.
Baihui Point: Massaging this point invigorates the mind and elevates yang energy. Method: Overlap the thumbs or index fingers of both hands on the point, applying gradual pressure until a sensation of soreness and fullness is felt. Maintain for 30 seconds while performing gentle, circular kneading motions. Repeat 5 times.
Temple Points: Massaging these areas not only refreshes the mind but also alleviates headaches.Method: Place the thumbs or index fingers of both hands on each temple. Gently rotate in a circular motion for 30 seconds.
Massage is most effective after bathing when blood circulation is optimal. Press each point for 3–5 seconds, release, then press again. Continue for 3–5 minutes per session. Drink a cup of warm water afterward to enhance detoxification.
