Never ignore stomach discomfort
China accounts for 40% of global gastric cancer cases
Gastric cancer ranks among the most prevalent malignant tumors worldwide, particularly in China. A decade ago, it was the leading cause of cancer in China. Over the past ten years, however, severe environmental pollution in major cities, coupled with smoking and vehicle emissions, has caused lung cancer to surpass gastric cancer as the top cause in urban areas. Nevertheless, gastric cancer incidence remains high in rural regions.
Focusing on work while neglecting diet
Beyond the high number of gastric cancer patients in China, an even greater concern is the rising incidence among young people. Foreign literature reports that gastric cancer in young adults accounts for 2.01% of all cases. According to multiple domestic hospitals, the incidence rate among those under 35 has reached 6%-11%, which is still more than three times higher than in other countries.
Avoid Taking Painkillers for Stomach Pain Without Consultation
When experiencing stomach pain, many people reach for painkillers. However, taking medication without identifying the cause not only masks symptoms but can also lead to persistent or worsening issues, especially if the pain stems from a gastric ulcer.
Seek medical attention promptly for stomach pain and take medication only under a doctor's guidance. Painkillers can damage the stomach lining in the acidic environment of the stomach, worsening the condition. If the pain is caused by stomach cramps, presenting as severe, twisting pain in the upper abdomen, antispasmodics such as atropine or belladonna tablets should be taken promptly. If regular upper abdominal pain begins about an hour after eating, it may be caused by a stomach ulcer. Take acid-suppressing medications and gastric mucosal protectors like Tagamet. If accompanied by diarrhea, it may be acute gastroenteritis, requiring antibiotics under a doctor's guidance.
Timing Matters When Taking Stomach Medication
While stomach medications come in many forms, their optimal intake times generally fall into three categories.
Half an hour before meals
This timing is ideal for medications that protect the gastric mucosa and promote gastric motility. The former, such as sucralfate and bismuth subsalicylate, require forming a protective layer directly on the stomach lining to act as a barrier. Therefore, they should typically be taken 30 minutes to 1 hour before meals to avoid food interfering with the drug's contact with the stomach wall. The latter, such as domperidone, cisapride, and mosapride, are best taken 15 to 30 minutes before meals. This allows sufficient time for absorption and action, maximizing efficacy and promoting gastrointestinal motility. Note that prokinetic agents should not be taken concurrently with antacids. Additionally, many people take gastric mucosal protectants before drinking alcohol to prevent gastric damage. Experts confirm this practice offers some gastric protection but cannot counteract alcohol's harm to organs like the liver.
Take with meals
Gastric acid secretion increases significantly after eating, so acid-suppressing medications are best taken with meals. Histamine receptor antagonists like cimetidine and ranitidine should be taken immediately after meals, while proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole and lansoprazole are best taken on an empty stomach before meals.Note that these medications should be swallowed whole. Additionally, when combining acid-suppressing drugs with antacids, ensure at least a one-hour interval between doses.
One hour after meals
This primarily refers to acid-neutralizing agents, including sodium bicarbonate, aluminum hydroxide, and magnesium aluminum carbonate. For example, the main ingredient in Stelbide is aluminum hydroxide, which neutralizes stomach acid, protects ulcer surfaces, and relieves gastric discomfort. Since only a small amount of aluminum hydroxide is absorbed from the intestines and most is excreted in feces, the duration of action of acid-neutralizing drugs like Stelbide in the stomach is related to the speed of gastric emptying. Therefore, taking Starcure on an empty stomach provides only 20–30 minutes of relief. However, taking it 1–2 hours after a meal may extend its effect to 3 hours. Administering the medication at peak gastric acid secretion allows it to achieve maximum neutralizing capacity.Additionally, since gastric acid secretion is continuous, if the effect of a single dose is insufficient, an additional dose may be taken. However, the total daily dose should not be increased. For example, doses can be taken 1 hour and 3 hours after meals, with an additional dose before bedtime.
