People dream every night, some of which are unpleasant, even frightening, painful, or anxiety-inducing—nightmares. Nightmares represent subconscious emotional reactions, particularly genuine expressions of real-life pressures and concerns. In The Interpretation of Dreams, Freud noted that while dream content may seem absurd or distorted, the emotions within them are genuine and cannot be ignored. Psychologists have identified five most common types of nightmares, each carrying distinct meanings. So, what are these common nightmares?Falling from heights often reflects a fear of losing control. The renowned psychoanalyst Jung recounted a case: a man who loved climbing dangerous peaks dreamed of falling from a great height. Jung warned him to temporarily stop mountaineering, but the man refused to heed the advice. He later died in a fall. His dream of falling was his subconscious mind warning him that his real-life risky behavior carried the danger of losing control.Sometimes, dreams of falling are caused by physiological factors. For instance, suddenly dreaming of stumbling just as you're about to fall asleep and waking up in fright may be triggered by changes in blood pressure.
Being late. This often signifies the dreamer's anxiety about feeling "too late" in life. For example, some women haven't found their ideal partner, while some men struggle to get their careers on track. These real-life anxieties can extend into dreams.
Paralysis. Dreaming of sudden paralysis or a vehicle breaking down, rendering one completely immobile, often reflects a real-life situation stuck in a deadlock or an entangled relationship with a partner that cannot be resolved or escaped.
Being chased. Often, the pursuer remains unseen, or feels like a demon, beast, or feared person. This stems from encountering difficult situations during the day and wanting to escape; it may also project inner insecurity and fear or defensiveness toward the surrounding environment. Frequent dreams of being chased require careful reflection on what fears or evasions exist within oneself.
Dreaming of a loved one's death. Such dreams often conceal our longing for loved ones and fear of losing them; they may also reflect anxiety about losing something profoundly important to us, manifested in the dream as the loss of a loved one.
