In daily life, people often use heat therapy to relieve various pains in parts of the body, such as sore eyes, neck pain, and sprained ankles. However, few realize that heat therapy offers significant health benefits. When combined with herbal ingredients, heat therapy allows the medicine to be absorbed locally, making treatment more direct and effective.Below, we briefly discuss the essentials of heat therapy:
Two Common Types of Heat Therapy
Dry Heat Therapy: Often performed using a hot water bottle. This method is convenient and easy to implement at home.Fill the hot water bottle halfway to two-thirds full with hot water. Tilt the bottle to expel air, then tighten the stopper. Wipe the surface dry with a cloth, invert the bottle and shake it to check for leaks. Once leak-free, wrap it in a cloth or towel and place it on the area requiring heat therapy.Ensure water temperature is not excessively high. If using boiling water, add sufficient cold water to achieve a suitable temperature of 50-60°C (122-140°F). Thoroughly inspect for leaks. Discontinue use if skin redness occurs. Replace the hot water as needed during application to maintain consistent warmth.
Wet Heat Compress: Soak a small towel in hot water, wring it out, and place it on the target area. Cover with a dry towel or cotton pad to retain heat. The compress temperature should be tolerable without causing discomfort. Alternatively, place a hot water bottle under the damp towel to maintain warmth. Wet heat compresses typically last 20-30 minutes.
Thermal compresses can treat these conditions:
Relieving buttock pain: For stiff buttock muscles with mild dull or aching discomfort, lie flat and apply a warm towel compress to the painful area to alleviate symptoms.
Treating menstrual cramps or cold-induced abdominal pain: For female menstrual cramps or abdominal pain caused by exposure to cold, a warm towel compress can help disperse stasis, regulate qi, and relieve pain.
Traumatic injuries: Avoid heat therapy during the acute phase of sports injuries. After 2-3 days, if there is no bleeding or swelling, apply a warm towel to alleviate symptoms.
Reducing hard lumps from injections: Gently place a warm compress on the hardened area after an injection for 30 minutes each time. Massage the area while applying heat to promote blood circulation and accelerate absorption of the medication.
Alleviating dizziness: Place a warm towel on the back of the head for several minutes at a time. This stimulates acupuncture points at the base of the skull, potentially improving dizziness in some patients while enhancing reaction time and cognitive function.
Relieving eye strain: Warm compresses promote blood circulation around the eyes, reducing fatigue and partially alleviating dry eye symptoms. They also offer benefits for eye health and mental clarity.
Important considerations for heat therapy:
1. Maintain moderate warmth—avoid excessive heat or lying directly on hot water bottles. Individuals with heart disease or hypertension should consult a physician or physical therapist before applying heat to the left shoulder or neck area. Discontinue immediately if symptoms worsen or discomfort occurs, and seek medical advice.
2. Avoid heat therapy if you have acute inflammation, dermatitis, thrombophlebitis, peripheral vascular disease, open wounds, recently healed skin, excessive pain or swelling, impaired temperature sensation (e.g., some diabetics), or inability to follow instructions (e.g., severe dementia patients).
3.After application, the affected area should feel warm with temporary skin redness. If persistent rash, pain, or discomfort occurs after heat therapy, seek medical attention promptly.
4. Proper heat therapy, combined with adequate rest and correct wound care—such as appropriate positioning and supportive exercises—can significantly accelerate recovery from many painful conditions. Consult a physical therapist or healthcare professional if in doubt.
