As people age, age spots gradually appear on the face. While they pose no significant health risks, they can severely impact one's appearance, creating a persistent sense of dirtiness on the skin. Embracing natural aging is ideal, but for those who find it difficult to accept, several removal methods exist. Recently, applying toothpaste has gained popularity as a way to eliminate age spots. Let's explore whether this approach is scientifically sound.
Is Applying Toothpaste to Remove Age Spots Reliable?
Among those with age spots, a popular method involves applying toothpaste to fade them. This approach is simple and inexpensive, making it quite appealing.Simply put, it involves applying toothpaste with cooling and detoxifying properties to the age spots before bed, then rinsing it off with water the next morning. Results are supposedly visible in about three months. However, this method is highly unreliable.Age spots are common benign skin lesions. While they pose no health risks, they significantly impact appearance. Toothpaste only acts on the skin's surface and cannot penetrate deeply enough to remove pigment deposits, rendering it ineffective for spot removal. This method is therefore highly inadvisable. Moreover, toothpaste contains skin-irritating ingredients. Daily application may not only fail to remove age spots but could also cause other skin issues.
Dr. Chen Wenjing, Chief Dermatologist at Southern Medical University Dermatology Hospital, stated in an interview that using toothpaste to remove age spots is unreliable. Toothpaste contains multiple ingredients, making the claim of its efficacy scientifically unsound. Moreover, the primary goal of removing age spots is to eliminate the benign tissue growths themselves, which toothpaste cannot achieve.
So how should age spots be removed?
1. Ginger Water for Age Spot Removal
Ginger water offers a simple yet effective method for removing age spots, as ginger's gingerol component effectively targets subcutaneous brown pigment deposits. Regularly drinking ginger water not only warms the body and alleviates cold symptoms but also helps eliminate age spots, providing significant health benefits for the elderly.
2. Vitamin E
Vitamin E also effectively reduces age spots. Apply vitamin E capsules directly to affected areas. This method has no side effects but requires consistent application over time to see results.
3. Laser Removal
For small, faint age spots, laser treatment can achieve complete removal.Typically, 2–3 sessions yield noticeable results. With consistent treatment over 3–6 months, multiple courses can achieve complete removal.
While age spots pose no health risks, they can significantly impact one's appearance and self-confidence, causing considerable distress. Effective removal requires scientifically proven methods; otherwise, adverse effects may occur.
