With increasing water pollution, concerns about drinking water safety have grown. Many people now purchase bottled water for daily consumption to ensure cleanliness. So, what is the shelf life of bottled water?
Current investigations indicate two primary microbial indicators for assessing drinking water: total colony count and total coliform bacteria.Generally, coliform bacteria levels are mostly within acceptable limits. The primary concern is excessive total colony count, which tends to worsen the longer the water is used. Given the widespread use of bottled water, the key consideration is its usage cycle—shorter is better. Some households use a single bottle for extended periods, like half a month or even a month, which violates hygiene standards.
National standards clearly define permissible levels for total bacterial count and coliform bacteria in bottled water. Due to structural flaws in water dispensers, once the water tank is opened, the water comes into contact with air. Most dispensers lack disinfection or filtration devices at their air intake ports. This allows airborne microorganisms and dust to enter the tank through these ports, contaminating the water.Therefore, we should not consume bottled water for extended periods. If the water remains unfinished after 20 days, it should not be drunk and can be repurposed to avoid waste.
Standard 18.9-liter bottles typically indicate a 3-month shelf life when unopened. Once opened, the water is safe for consumption for up to 15 days.
It is understood that once opened, bottled water left for over two weeks may taste unchanged but will exceed bacterial limits.
Bottled water undergoes advanced purification during production and meets quality standards if QS-certified. However, bacteria multiply rapidly in opened water beyond 15 days, potentially causing diarrhea.
Risks of Bottled Water
Concerns over tap water safety have driven people to consume bottled water. Yet bottled water also harbors hidden dangers. Beyond challenges in tracing water sources and ensuring quality, the greatest risk lies in secondary contamination. Water dispensers that aren't regularly disinfected can become breeding grounds for bacteria and viruses.When replacing water barrels, one often observes bubbles rising to the surface. At this stage, most airborne bacteria dissolve into the water and multiply rapidly. Sampling by Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Environmental Resource Utilization and Protection revealed that at room temperature, harmful bacterial colonies in water dispensers numbered zero on day one but surged to 8,000 by day ten!This demonstrates severe secondary contamination of bottled water. Furthermore, all bottled water undergoes ozone disinfection, where residual ozone forms carcinogenic bromate in the water, causing chronic health damage. Additionally, low-priced bottled water often uses substandard containers, leading to significant water quality contamination. Therefore, the safety of drinking bottled water is difficult to guarantee.
