Wearing the right belt can serve as a constant reminder to control your appetite and prevent sudden waistline expansion.Over time, belts have evolved from functional garments to decorative accessories. For many, belts are no longer necessities but rather "cherry-on-top" adornments. Consequently, fewer people wear belts daily. In reality, belts serve as a "health gauge," constantly reminding us to live healthily.
Beware of obesity. As living standards rise, Chinese people are experiencing "expanding waistlines," joining the ranks of the obese. Recent studies reveal that China's waist circumference growth rate is the highest globally! Li Quanmin, Chief Physician of the Endocrinology Department at the Second Artillery General Hospital, told Life Times that excessive waist size is a major risk factor for metabolic syndrome. If you don't wear a belt regularly, you may become less sensitive to changes in your waistline. Wearing a properly fitted belt, however, can serve as a constant reminder to control your appetite and prevent sudden increases in waist size.
Prevent gastric ptosis. Chang Yuying, Director of the Gastroenterology Department at Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital, explains that for slender individuals, not wearing a belt or wearing one that is too loose may lead to gastric ptosis due to insufficient abdominal support. Over time, this can impair normal digestive function.Wearing a belt maintains abdominal tension, supporting internal organs like the stomach and intestines to prevent sagging caused by excessive strain. Protecting the waist. Professor Yang Li from the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences notes that the waist serves as the boundary between the upper and lower body. Wearing a belt not only promotes an upright posture but also protects the waist, especially in cold weather. Moreover, it provides support for the psoas major muscle, helping stabilize the lumbar spine.
Though we learn to wear belts from childhood, many remain unclear about the proper method.
Position the belt at the level of the navel. When fastened, it should lie flat against the waist during calm breathing, ideally allowing space for one finger between the belt and waist. When experiencing abdominal bloating or after eating a large meal, loosen the belt slightly. For those with a slender build, narrow waist and abdomen, or organ prolapse, the belt should be fastened slightly tighter to support abdominal organs and provide protection. Heavier individuals should use narrow belts (2–3 cm wide), while slimmer individuals should opt for wider belts (around 5 cm wide). Those of average build should use medium-width belts (approximately 4 cm wide).Avoid stiff belts, especially metal ones.
For specific groups, belts can be worn more loosely. Elderly individuals should opt for elastic waistbands about 1/4 shorter than their waist measurement and 2–4 cm wide. This prevents indentations on the abdomen while automatically adjusting for comfort. Those unsuitable for elastic waistbands may use 3–5 cm wide belts. Their larger contact area prevents abdominal indentation, but regular adjustments are necessary. Maternity belts should be soft, prioritizing looseness over tightness.
