Young people might say, "We all go to bed before midnight—we're not staying up late." But what time exactly constitutes staying up late? While no one can pinpoint the exact hour, we all understand this principle: if nighttime sleep falls short of 6 to 8 hours, the damage to health is significant.
Let's break it down: if someone sleeps at midnight and starts work at 8 AM the next day, their sleep falls short of 8 hours. Even when lying in bed, the body undergoes a period of light sleep—lasting anywhere from a few minutes to over half an hour, varying by individual. Some may fall asleep within minutes, while others might take over half an hour. Those who frequently stay up late tend to have longer periods of light sleep. To make it to work by 8 a.m., they'd need to wake up by 7 a.m. at the latest—or even 6:30 a.m. for those living farther away. This leaves them with just over five hours of sleep at most. If this becomes a long-term pattern, it's definitely staying up late and damaging your health.
Some argue, "I sleep at 3 a.m. and wake up at 11 a.m., getting 8 hours total. Isn't that sufficient?"
Absolutely not. Staying up late refers to insufficient nighttime sleep. After 6 a.m., daylight prevails—no matter how much you sleep afterward, it doesn't count as nighttime rest. Thus, this pattern still constitutes staying up late. To avoid it, aim to sleep before 11 p.m.
Staying up late essentially falls into two categories: going to bed late or being unable to sleep. Both are highly detrimental to health. The first is a choice, but prolonged late nights can lead to insomnia. The second is a pathological condition—insomnia—whose dangers surpass those of staying up late. Chronic insomnia significantly increases the risk of depression. So let's examine the specific harms of staying up late on our bodies:
1. Damages the liver and gallbladder.
Staying up late is most damaging to the liver. As the body's largest chemical processing plant, the liver synthesizes and converts numerous nutrients while detoxifying many toxins, bearing an immense burden. The period from 11 PM to 2 AM is the liver's repair time. If you're not asleep during this window, the liver cannot repair itself. Prolonged overwork may cause premature liver failure, leading to various liver diseases.
Our ability to overcome illnesses stems from a robust immune system that combats bacteria and viruses. However, chronic sleep deprivation weakens immunity. After just three consecutive sleepless nights, immune function can drop to zero, leaving the body vulnerable to even minor viruses. This state also creates an ideal window for cancer cells to proliferate, making frequent night owls highly susceptible to cancer.
