1. Can abdominal massage help with weight loss?
> Abdominal massage can indeed aid weight loss while improving blood circulation and enhancing the body's resistance. Many beauty institutions now employ this method for weight management. However, consistent long-term application is essential for noticeable results. Additionally, abdominal massage helps control appetite. Performing it before meals creates a feeling of fullness, making it easier to manage food intake and achieve weight loss goals.
2. Is belly massage effective for weight loss?
Abdominal massage is effective for weight loss, but it must be performed correctly. The primary goal is to reduce abdominal fat while also alleviating digestive and urinary system issues—truly a multi-benefit approach. By stimulating acupoints near the abdomen, it regulates neuroendocrine functions, boosts blood circulation, and increases abdominal temperature, thereby promoting fat burning. For optimal results, massage during bathing is recommended.
3. How to Massage Your Abdomen for Weight Loss
3.1 Harmonizing the Abdomen
Action: Place your stronger hand on your abdomen with the other hand resting on top. Starting around the navel, make clockwise circular motions across the entire abdominal area (from below the ribs to below the navel). Apply moderate pressure for at least 6–8 times, up to 10–15 times.
Purpose: This area accumulates fat, toxins, and excess fluids. Broad circular movements stimulate colonic peristalsis, regulating digestion and elimination.
3.2 Purify the Abdomen
Action: Locate the four points distributed around the navel (above, below, left, and right). Perform detailed circular movements around each point. Apply focused pressure, completing 10 circles per point. After completing these, locate one final point directly above the navel, below the ribcage. Perform 10 final circles around this point.
Purpose: Unlike broad circular movements, this step targets localized sculpting. Following the initial warm-up, it stimulates fluid circulation in this area more precisely, aiding the elimination of excess fat, toxins, and water.
Traditional Chinese Medicine Abdominal Massage Technique
Preparatory Position: Ensure warmth. Remove clothing and loosen pants. Lie supine on a bed with your body straight, ideally resting on a low pillow. Relax completely, focus your mind, regulate your breathing, press your tongue against the roof of your mouth, and concentrate your awareness on the lower abdomen.
Massage the Solar Plexus Area: Slowly raise both hands. Place the middle three fingers (index, middle, and ring fingers) of both hands together and press them onto the solar plexus area (the soft spot below the lower edge of the sternum, commonly known as the pit of the stomach). Perform circular motions in a clockwise direction from right → up → left → down, massaging 21 times. Then massage 21 times in a counterclockwise direction from right to left.
Circular Massage Along the Midline and Sides of the Abdomen: Using the middle three fingers of both hands, massage downward from the solar plexus in a clockwise direction while moving downward. Continue until reaching the pubic symphysis below the navel (the hairline at the lower abdomen). Then, using the middle three fingers of both hands, spread outward from the pubic symphysis while massaging upward. Both hands should return to the solar plexus, where they meet to complete the cycle.Repeat this cycle 21 times.
Push along the midline: Join the middle three fingers of both hands and push downward along the midline from the solar plexus to the pubic symphysis, repeating 21 times.
Right-hand circular abdominal massage: Use the right hand to massage around the navel in a clockwise direction (right-up-left-down) for 21 times.
Left-hand counterclockwise abdominal massage: Use the left hand to massage the abdomen in a counterclockwise direction around the navel, following the path left-up-right-down, for 21 times.
Massage the three major abdominal weight-loss acupoints
1. Tianshu Point
Location: Three finger-widths to the left and right of the navel.
Stimulating this point offers significant bidirectional effects on intestinal regulation—it can both stop diarrhea and relieve constipation. Regular massage maintains gut health, clears accumulated waste, and effortlessly reduces abdominal fat.
Massage Method: Before bedtime, use the fingertips of both index fingers to simultaneously massage Tianshu in a circular motion 50–100 times, repeating once in a counterclockwise and once in a clockwise direction.
2. Daxiong Point
Location: 4 cun (approximately 10 cm) to the side of the navel.
Massaging this point promotes bowel movements, expels fats from the intestines, reduces weight, eliminates excess fat around the waist and abdomen, and lowers blood lipids.
Massage Method: Simultaneously press with the fingertips of both hands and massage in a circular motion 100 times.
3. Zhongwan Point (CV12)
Location: Located on the upper abdomen, on the anterior midline, 4 cun above the umbilicus.
Benefits: Zhongwan's primary function is stimulating intestinal peristalsis. Regular stimulation protects the esophagus by preventing rapid eating, which can cause food stagnation in the stomach, leading to indigestion and weight gain.
