In traditional Chinese wellness practices, TCM massage is indispensable. Beyond pressing techniques, another key method is rubbing. Today, we explore the "rubbing" technique in TCM massage to help boost your immunity.
Facial Rubbing Improves Blood Circulation
Facial rubbing is a folk therapy involving gently rubbing the face with hands, offering health benefits and preventing certain ailments. Qing Dynasty physician Wu Shangxian noted in "Li Yue Pian Wen": "Morning facial rubbing not only enhances radiance but also harmonizes qi and blood, elevates yang energy, and benefits the stomach."
Method: Each morning, rub your hands together until warm. Using your middle fingers, stroke upward along both sides of the nose toward the forehead. At the forehead, spread your hands outward across the cheeks and stroke downward. Repeat this facial rubbing motion over ten times until the face feels gently warm.
This method improves facial blood circulation, promoting a rosy complexion and radiance while alleviating fatigue. It treats conditions such as facial nerve paralysis, hyperpigmentation, melasma, and facial neuralgia. Consistent practice delays facial aging and postpones the appearance of age spots.During dry weather, first wash your face with warm water, pat dry, apply moisturizer, then proceed with rubbing to hydrate the skin and prevent chapping. Individuals with facial skin conditions, boils, abscesses, dermatographism, or allergies should avoid this method.
"Rubbing" falls under the rubbing, pushing, and stroking techniques in traditional Chinese massage. It involves applying light pressure with the hands to the body surface through unidirectional, back-and-forth, or circular motions. Regular rubbing can relax tendons, unblock meridians, promote blood circulation, dispel blood stasis, and prevent diseases.
Regularly rubbing 7 areas promotes longevity
Rubbing the forehead refreshes the mind. Place fingertips of both palms on the forehead, facing each other, and rub unidirectionally from the centerline outward, 30-50 times daily. This method clears the mind and delays the appearance of "forehead wrinkles," best performed upon waking.
Rub the nostrils to prevent colds. Starting from the center of the eyebrows, use both index fingers to gently push down along the bridge of the nose and then rub back up. Apply moderate pressure until the nostrils turn slightly red. This method accelerates blood circulation in the nasal area, stimulates acupoints, and helps prevent colds and rhinitis.
Rub both ears for better hearing. The ears contain numerous acupoints. Gently press both ears with your palms, then rub them up and down repeatedly until the ear lobes become warm and slightly red. This stimulates the ear's acupoints, not only improving hearing and mental alertness but also strengthening the body.
Rub the chest and ribs to regulate emotions. Gently place both palms on the sternum and both sides of the ribs, performing circular rubbing motions. Do 50 rubs per area, repeating several times daily. This method enhances heart and lung function while soothing the mind and regulating emotions.
Rub the abdomen to regulate the intestines. Gently place your palms on the epigastric region and perform clockwise or counterclockwise pushing motions. Clockwise rubbing promotes bowel movements, while counterclockwise rubbing helps stop diarrhea. Additionally, doing this before bed calms the mind and promotes sleep.
Rub the lower back to warm the kidneys. Gently press both palms onto the lower back with fingertips pointing downward. Rub back and forth for 5-10 minutes until the area feels warm. This method warms the kidneys and strengthens the waist. Daily practice helps prevent lower back soreness and pain.Rub the palms or backs of both hands together until they become red and warm. This stimulates hand acupoints and fortifies the body. Rub each sole with the corresponding palm until warm. This boosts immunity and resistance, preventing colds and respiratory illnesses.
