Regularly Stimulating Acupoints to Promote Digestion: Office Workers' Break-Time TCM Exercises

Modern office workers often sit for eight hours daily amid demanding schedules and high stress, leading to poor digestive function in many. Traditional Chinese acupoint massage effectively treats digestive issues like indigestion, bloating, abdominal pain, chest tightness, and gastrointestinal disorders. Let's incorporate acupoint massage into our downtime to aid digestion.
1. Place both thumbs on your chest, with the remaining four fingers positioned under each armpit. Apply opposing pressure to lift and hold the chest muscles, then release. Simultaneously move outward from the center, repeating this motion three times.
2. Starting from the Shanzhong point (midpoint between the nipples on the body's midline), use both thumbs to push outward toward the Niuzhong points on either side. Continue pushing horizontally along the intercostal spaces to the sides of the chest. Then move down one intercostal space and repeat the outward push from the midline to the sides, proceeding sequentially downward.
3. Push outward from the midline of the abdomen toward both sides, moving sequentially from the upper abdomen to the lower abdomen. Repeat three times.
4. Pinch the abdomen with both hands. Work from one side to the opposite side, pinching once each on the upper and lower abdomen. Pinch a section of abdominal tissue (skin, subcutaneous tissue, and muscle) with both hands, gently lift and hold briefly, then release and move forward. Pinch another section, release, and repeat. Perform this sequence three times.
5. Massage the abdomen with your palms. Begin at the center and perform clockwise circular motions, gradually expanding outward in 30–50 repetitions. Then perform counterclockwise circular motions from the outer edges inward for 30–50 repetitions.
Massaging the abdomen between 1–3 PM daily yields optimal digestive benefits. This timeframe coincides with peak energy flow in the small intestine meridian, where abdominal massage accelerates nutrient absorption and digestion. Additionally, stimulating the Zhongwan acupoint (4 cun above the navel) alleviates stomach pain, bloating, and nausea.
