Whether tea enthusiasts or not, most people have heard of or tasted Tieguanyin tea. It's quite common in daily life, with some even becoming utterly devoted to it. As one of China's Ten Famous Teas, moderate consumption of Tieguanyin offers significant health benefits.
Originating from Xiping Town, Anxi County, Quanzhou City, Tieguanyin was discovered between 1723 and 1735. Named for the Tieguanyin tea plant from which its leaves are harvested, it earned its place among China's top ten teas.
Chinese teas are categorized into six types: green tea, black tea, oolong tea, dark tea, yellow tea, and white tea. Tieguanyin belongs to the oolong tea category.
Tieguanyin is a renowned Chinese oolong tea, occupying a middle ground between green and black teas. It possesses the fresh, vibrant notes of green tea alongside the sweet, mellow character of black tea. As a semi-fermented tea, it undergoes controlled oxidation. The leaves exhibit slight reddish hues. Premium Anxi Tieguanyin features robust, tightly rolled tea leaves as heavy as iron, with distinct "lotus petal green" hues.green stems with red dots, a high sweet floral aroma, and a sweet, mellow, fresh, and crisp taste. It possesses a unique character with a sweet and rich aftertaste, retaining its fragrance even after seven infusions. The liquor is golden yellow, and the leaves are plump, soft, bright, and uniform, with red dots on the edges and green centers edged in red.
Tieguanyin's fame stems from its distinctive "Guanyin charm"—a refined, elegant fragrance. When brewed, it releases a natural orchid aroma with a pure, rich flavor and a long-lasting, fragrant bouquet, earning it the reputation of "retaining fragrance even after seven infusions."Beyond the general health benefits of tea, it also offers anti-aging properties, helps prevent arteriosclerosis and diabetes, aids in weight loss and body shaping, prevents dental caries, clears heat and reduces inflammation, and counteracts the effects of smoking and alcohol.
Tieguanyin is rich in amino acids, vitamins, minerals, tea polyphenols, and alkaloids, containing diverse nutritional and medicinal components that make it highly popular among consumers. Not only is it a naturally delicious beverage with a high fragrance and mellow taste, but its health-promoting properties also rank among the best in teas.
Like other teas, Tieguanyin should not be consumed immediately after meals. This is because it contains significant tannic acid, which can bind with proteins to form astringent tannic protein. This protein slows intestinal peristalsis, potentially causing constipation and increasing the toxic effects of harmful substances on the liver, leading to fatty liver disease. Therefore, it is best to drink Tieguanyin about an hour after meals.
【Editor's Note】: Moderate tea consumption greatly benefits health, so incorporating tea into daily life is advisable. However, note that excessive tea drinking can cause "tea intoxication," which is harmful to health.
