Parents universally desire children who are bright, intelligent, and lively. However, the foundation for raising a gifted child lies in the brain's developmental trajectory during the fetal stage. Below, we outline key milestones in fetal brain development:
1. Around the 20th day after conception, the embryonic brain's primordial genes form;
2. By the second month of pregnancy, the contours of the cerebral gyri become distinctly visible;
3. By the third month, brain cell development enters its first peak phase;
4. At 45 weeks gestation, fetal brain cells remain in a rapid growth phase, occasionally exhibiting memory traces;
5. Starting from the sixth month, sulci begin to appear on the fetal brain surface, and the layered structure of the cerebral cortex is largely established;
6. By the seventh month, the neural pathways governing perception and movement are relatively well-developed, and the fetus begins to exhibit the capacity for thought and memory;
7. By the eighth month, the cerebral cortex is more developed, and the major sulci on the brain's surface are fully formed.
By the sixth month of pregnancy, the fetal brain already contains 14 billion brain cells—meaning it has essentially acquired the total number of brain cells it will possess throughout its lifetime. The subsequent task lies solely in enhancing the quality of these brain cells; attempting to increase their quantity at this stage is likely futile.
This demonstrates that the fetal period is a critically important stage for brain development.From this perspective alone, systematic and scientific prenatal education starting from the fetal stage becomes imperative. Of course, the fetal brain remains immature, particularly as the crucial meninges have not yet fully developed—a process that typically continues until around age 10 post-birth. Expectant parents should be mindful of this limitation during prenatal education, avoiding impatience for quick results, as haste will only hinder progress.
